Is it the HIPS or Growing Pains??
« on: April 16, 2008, 05:33:43 am »
Well Titan has been limping/lameness for the past 2 weeks :(
He seams fine he want to run and play and bounce around but I am concerned about his back legs. We thought is was both but over these last 2 weeks it seams just the right leg is bothering him. Both parents are cleared for hips and the vet thinks it could be pano...bone pain from growing..sooo I call the breader and she tells me that the Dad went through the same thing up untill 1 1/2 years. With no long term damage or side effect; and the pain just stopped one day and that was it never to return again. So is it just the growing pains?? Anyone else have babies with growing pains? The Vet reccommended Metacal for the pain for a month and see how he does.
Any suggestions?? :)

YUP we have had that issue. The breeder said that his lines do have growing pains in them, some don't..  Titan's uncle, mac, had a shoulder limp for 6 months, titan's immediate father had rear leg issues too..... now Titan is a little slow getting up, but once he is up he is crazy!!

Strider had pano, from 5 months to 8 months. It was pretty horrid for him alot of pain until the anti-inflamitories kicked in. Then it just disappeared, and good riddance!
Stella
So the anti-inflamitories helped then?  :)

I did, i gave him a soft surface and i also give/gave him DGP... dog gone pain....you can get it at petsmart (i think perhaps petco) it is a holistic pain medicine.  Although, they are sore for a reason, and sometimes it is better they feel the pain so they don't over do themselves...(at least that is my thoughts) it is like when they spay a female, and tell you to keep them quiet but they will give you deramax or remadyl to get rid of pain. Well...if you want them to be quiet, then let them be. Some times these pain meds are horrible on the poor little (well in our case big) bodies.

Hope your baby is soon feeling better. I know how miserable it can make them feel, my boy Drago (12/1994 - 07/2002),had it when he was around 8 or 9 months old. Here are a couple good links containing information on pano.

Thank you so much! Those article were a great read!
We currently have him on Medcam to see if that helps with the pain. The vet said he probably wont stop limping or going lame that could just happen but the pain factor should be reduced.
So hopefully in the next few weeks we will see how he is holding up!
Thanks again!  ;D

Both my mals have had growing pains on and off.  I talked with the breeder and hey said it was common for the parents as well during growth spurts. It was worse and more noticeable when they were younger.  Now it just seems like every so often they may seem a little stiff - especially after a hard play. (we are just about a year old now) We tried the rimadyl in the beginning but opted to just slow them down during the spurt.  The meds gave their stomachs a hard time and the trade off wasn't worth it for either of them.  It has gotten a lot better as they have slowed in their growth - finally!

Good Luck

I'm late weighing in on this but Kaila had Pano at around 8 months or so.  The vet gave her Rimadyl for the pain and now at 3yo she is awesome.  She wasn't as bad as some with the pain but then again I swear that girl has no pain receptors in her body.
