My kiwi died this morning
« on: April 28, 2008, 12:25:39 pm »
I can't understand it, he was perfectly fine, active eating, drinking, no symptoms, this morning I found him in the corner of the nesting box with the babies all snuggled up on him, and he was dead. Poor Mango is freaking out, she keeps flying to the top of the cage and sending out "Where are you??" calls. I dont know if I should pull her babies (Apple and Cherry) to hand feed them to relieve her of some stress, or what... I dont know what happened to Kiwi, he was only 3 and doing perfectly fine... I am still waiting for the enviornmental test for PBFD but Mango tested negative for PBFD, I got her test results back two days ago. Hers was the first one back...

Fly high sweet Kiwi- one of my first ones. You were so beautiful and I will miss you terribly :(  :'(

I'm so sorry Shawn, sending bug healing hugs your way.

Lend to You a Bird
"I will lend to you for awhile, a bird" God said.
For you to love him while he lives and to mourn for him when he is dead.
Maybe for twelve of fourteen years, or maybe two or three.
But will you, till I call him back, take care of him for me?
He'll bring his charms to gladden you and should his stay be brief,
You'll always have his memories as solace for your grief.
I can not promise that he will stay, since all from earth return,
But there are lessons taught below I want this bird to learn.
I've looked the whole world over in search of teachers true,
And from the folks that crowd life's land, I have chosen you.
Now will you give him all your love, nor think the labor vain,
Nor hate me when I come to take my lovely bird again.
I fancied that I heard them say,
For all the joys this bird will bring, the risk of grief you'll run.
Will you shelter him with tenderness?
Will you love him while you may?
And for the happiness you'll know, forever grateful stay?
But should I call him back much sooner than you've planned,
Please brave the bitter grief that comes and try to understand.
If, by your love, you've managed, my wishes to achieve,
In memory of him you've loved, be thankful, do not grieve.
Cherish every moment of your feathered charge.
He filled your home with songs of joy, the time he was alive.
Let not his passing take from you those memories to enjoy.
"I will lend to you, a Bird" God said, and teach you all you have to do.
And when I call him back to heaven, you will know he loved you too.

Thanks all, and thanks Michelle for that beautiful poem.. this has been a very hard morning  :'(

Michelle.. I was going to email you but I might as well ask you here.. do you think I need to pull the babies for handfeeding with just Mango caring for them? There are two, Apple is 3 and a half weeks and Cherry is almost 3. They are both big and strong and I am handling them daily, but I haven't been co-feeding just letting mom and dad do their thing...

Aw, thats terrible!
Sorry for your loss.

I used to have cockatiels that had one litter of chicks.
I left them in the cage with mom and dad to take care of.
Apparently I did wrong, as they never did take to humans
that well, even though I handled them a few times a day.
I was told at my local pet store that I should have been
feeding them so that they bonded with a human.
Have no idea about your breed though.

If you want them to be hand tame I would pull them for feeding so that they get socialized more.If you are worried about Mango feeding them on her own it is possibel she can handle it,I know a male Sun that is now feeding out a chick because the Mom passed. The main thing I would be comcerned with now is if you do pull them you will be handling them so much more and the risk of passing PBFD is greater.(If they have it) Any idea on when your enviromental swabs or going to be back? How are their feathers looking now that they are coming in more? Sending big hugs,I have been in your shoes,so I know how you feel.

I'm so sorry to hear about Kiwi.
I think that Mango could handle the feedings herself but if you want really tame birds, hand feeding is the best way to go.  They should tame up either way, but they tame faster when being handfed.

You tested for PBFD, but have you tested for psittacosis?  It would be the other most commenly seen bird disease in captive birds.  Normally there are symptoms for this, but not always.  I just had Louigi tested for both yesterday but won't find the results out for a week.

Everyone is doing good so far.. we are co-feeding and helping out Mango. I was told that two really shouldn't be a problem for her but I wanted to give her a hand just in case. The babies are very personable with people because I handle them constantly and are taking the food very well. Apple is going to look just like his daddy :(

Mango is heartbroken and keeps flying around looking for Kiwi it's breaking my heart!

Yes, everyone was tested negative for psiticossis
