Giant Schnauzer Pup 9 weeks, questions
« on: May 29, 2008, 09:02:57 am »
Just got my GS pup and he's really wonderful.
I'm loking for tips from anyone regarding crate training and any other advice other Giant Schnauzer owners may have.  I'ver heard a variety of things in regards to how long it might take to crate train and housebreak this breed so info is much appreciated.
thanks,
Lisa

Welcome to the group! You will love it here! We do... I am Adrienne and Titan is my 11 month old English Mastiff!
Also you have to promise to post some picts soon WE would love to see you new addition!
As for the crating... Titan just got out of crate when he was about 10 months old.
The only thing I can reccommend is to make it as positive as possible. We would leave Titan for 5 mins and when he stopped whinning we would pop back into the room...the time increments just went up from there. When we went to let him out it was with lots of praise and treats so the he would recognize being in there is not like jail it a postive experiance. After a couple of weeks we would tell him to go to bed and he would waltz right in there and lay down! He knew the sooner he got in there the sooner we would be over to say good boy and give him a treat and then close the door.   ;) And then when we let him out it was with more praise and treats!
Good luck and keep us posted on he's doing!  :D

Hi Lisa,
Our Giant is now about 6 months old.  He is the absolute best (75 pounds already).  We started crate training on the first day with short 5 or 10 minute stays and continued those for a week or two.  Lots of praise and treats when they get out.  We read that it was best to crate the puppy and then leave the area.  Let him/her cry for a bit.  When they settled down, come back in with treats and praise and let them out.  Seems to have worked out for us.  Very early on, we would tell Kronk to 'go to his room' and entice him into the crate w/ treats.  After just a few weeks he started going to his room on command where he waits for his treat.  That's still how we're doing it today.
House breaking was pretty much done after a month or so, but he still sleeps in the crate and stays there when everyone leaves the house.
Good luck!

Welcome!  I can't wait to see pics of your new baby.  We've had great luck crate training pups using a Kong stuffed with peanut butter, a little of their kibble, and some treats.  Our's loved it enough to want to go into the crate & it kept them busy long enough to get relaxed & sleepy.   ;)  :)

Yay, 2 GS puppies on the board!  I'm glad that you both found us & I bet that they're both adorable.
