Actually I was going to say pretty much what Stella did. It sounds like you are on the right track, and good for you for trying to fix it. I have also had some Dobe's, my mother currently has one who is a big baby!!!
I did want to add though that other dog owners, not just dobe's, can be very helpful in these situations. My GSD was a butt until he was about 3-4, then he was an angel to everyone. Take whatever advice you can, try it and if it doesn't work try the next thing. Good luck and keep us posted.
