I would have never guessed that's how they get a drink. I would have liked to see several dogs taped to see if they all drink the same way. I know Keiko does it that way b/c she drink the same way that dog does. But only about 3-4 inches of tongue come out when Gunther drinks so either he's really talented or it's a bit different. He's not messy, either.
Ooops, forgot to add..........I've seen danes being used as service dogs before. A couple of shows on Animal Planet a few years ago highlighted them. One was for a similar problem....mob ility related. The other was I think "That's My Baby" show and it was following a certain dane puppy that was to be evaluated for service work.
