Opinions on neutering
« on: February 16, 2009, 10:49:58 am »
Hello Everyone,

I'm curious about peoples opinions on neutering male dogs.
We've always had our dogs (male and female) altered between 4-5mo's of age.

Lincoln actually already has an appointment for the end of March to get neutered, micro chipped and to get his rabies vac.

A number of people have told me that neutering giant breed dogs too early can cause problems. Nobody has really told me what problems though or sent me any information on the matter.

Can anyone fill me in? or direct me towards some links? I'm not even sure what I'm looking for.

Cat
Serenity: Fila Brasileiro Female
Kaylee: Fila Brasileiro Female
Lincoln: Newfoundland Male
Keegan: Fila Brasileiro Male
Cathen: Fila Brasileiro Male
Bug & Ger: Devon Rex Cats
Remus: Roommates Mutt
Rescues of all sorts

There have been some very good posts on this site on this topic. Until I got Clifford I always had dogs and cats spayed and neutered quite young. Clifford is my first giant dog. After much research I decided to wait until he was 18 mos to 2 yrs old. There were too many possible growth problems and cancer risks and no real reason for me to get it done early. Annie and other dogs Clifford regularly associate with have all been spayed or neutered so no problem there. Well Clifford is getting neutered next week, he will be 17 mos old, almost made it to my planned age. He has done some marking and humping, and I have the time to do it now. Actually it's kind of funny watching him try to hump Annie. He gets her between his front paws and starts humping, well his back end is 2 or more feet away from her. ::) I don't know if it will help or not with the marking and humping, but it's time to do it anyway.

Luke is supposed to be neutered this summer if I keep my plans. He was 1 year old February 8th and I decided to wait until 12-18 months. My vet wanted to do it at a few months but the more I read about it, the more I decided to wait.
