Pit Bull keeps getting snakebit.
« on: July 07, 2009, 11:11:10 pm »
Our 55 lb Pit Bull has been bitten twice in the face in the last month by poisonous Cottonmouth snakes in the yard. Had a Great Pyrenees with pups die from eating the head of another Cottonmouth we killed. We figured it absorbed all the snakes venom in it's stomach. Didn't know it had eaten the head until it was too late. Pit Bull got a little sick and had a swelled head for a while but was out there looking for more snakes the next day. Didn't carry it to the vet either time as it got bit on Sundays. So how do dogs handle poisonous snakebites from different types of snakes? This is really getting annoying, for me and the dog.

I have no idea, but there might be someone at animal control who would know.
I did find this site and if you haven't seen it already here it is:

Immediate vet attention and anti-venom with specific fluids is critical if the bite is truly poisonous...th e biggest risk is kidney failure.....

The beautfiul bloodhound that won the AKC Eukanuba a few years ago just died from a snake bit - but he didn't die for 9 more months post bite until his kidneys failed.
Definitely something that must be prevented, and your guy likely still needs vet care.
