My neighbor's dog is always tied to a cable and barks at everything. It's aggresive too. It bit one of his daughter's friends and the neighbor guy went through the roof. They have also left the dog for a week and I don't think anyone checked on it. I wanted to call the humane society, but I just moved into my house and felt that the neighbor would have known who it was. I feel soooo sorry for the dog. It would be so easy for them to put up a fence. I have a fenced yard and so does the neighbors on the other side of him. It would be across the back of his lot and along the front by his house.

I get the impression that some of you don't approve of cable runs?
I have a big yard with no fence, Earnest used a cable run for his first year or so, until I acquired enought chain link panels to set up a play yard for him.  I've used them before, too- they are certainly safer than staking a dog out, or tying them to a stationary object. I like to run mine from above the back door, so the dog can come to the door if it wants to come in.
Of course, I would never leave a dog on one unsupervised until they got the hang of it, and NEVER when I wasn't home or for an extended period of time.   But to go out and potty, or spend some time out from under mom's feet, to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air, they are a good alternative for those of us who rent and can't afford or aren't allowed to fence.

Rocco spent his first two years going out on a tie out.  I never left him out alone but it worked for him to spend time in the sun and to go potty.  Now he has fenced in yard to play in.  I think any method of containment is good as long as they used properly.
Thanks,

Emily and 1 husband, 1 boy, 1 on the way, and 4 crazy dogs

I guess the photo and wording just made me think that this dog may be on the tieout full time.
