OFA and pedigree research.....
« on: September 05, 2005, 04:21:57 pm »
have to say I am absolutely thrilled with how easy it is to do
pedigree research on the OFA website now.

Here is what I have found out today with just a few clicks:

In the Penny/Burton ( VP-1 BPIG BPISS A/C CH Ravenscrest The
Alchemist HIC CGC TDI ) proposed breeding, there are 12 dogs in the first 3 generations of the pedigree.

Of these 12 behind this breeding, all 12 have normal hips. There are
5 Excellents, and 7 Goods. Burton is also Excellent. Also in this
pedigree, there are 5 Excellent siblings, 25 siblings rated Good, and
7 siblings rated fair.

Where elbows are concerned, it's pretty much a given at this point
that Penny will not get an OFA elbow number.

Burton is normal. Of the 12 dogs behind Burton and Penny, there are 5
dogs with normal ratings. Burtons parents, 2 of his grandparents, and
Penny's great grand sire on her sire's side all have normal ratings.
There are 3 dogs in the pedigree with one elbow that is DJD grade 1,
and one elbow that is normal. 1 is Penny, and 1 is her sire, and 1 is
a littermate to the potential sire. In this pedigree, there are 10
normal siblings: 4 on Penny's side, and 6 on Burton's. Hopefully this
will increase when Penny's littermates begin to get elbow screened.

The Cardiac background is EXCELLENT. Out of 14 dogs in a 3 gen
pedigree (including the potential sire and dam, both of which are OFA
Cardiac normal), there are 10 normal dogs, all examined by
Cardiologists. All 4 dogs who were not screened are on the 3rd line
of the pedigree. In addition to this, there are also 6 siblings
screened cardiac normal by a Cardiologist.

There is also an excellent CERF (Canine Eye Registry Foundation, they screen and register dogs who have normal eyes) background, however, I have not been able to print out a vertical pedigree re: CERF since Penny's info is not posted there yet.

I have printed out this material in a pedigree form to keep in Penny's book.

It's just fascinating. I LOVE this research and planning stage.

Wow! That's awesome that you have access to that on the OFA website. I have so much respect for people who take breeding seriously and know all about genetics. I find it fascinating and overwhelming! Wish all breeders were into it as much as you are Redyre! It seems like an art to me. Fascinating.

It really is an art, but there is a lot of good science behind that art too.

Caring breeders research pedigrees VERY carefully. We want to produce the very best dogs we can with each breeding. So the research is very important.

This particular dog has great significance to me because of the Elbow background in Penny's pedigree. Let us just say it's not stellar. However, even with that mark in the minus column, she still genuinely has a LOT to offer her breed in type, temperament, and soundness.

Burton is probably one of the strongest, if not THE strongest dog in North America today for genetics, both hips and elbows.

I have also already consulted with several people who are more familiar with Burton's background. Their input about the breeding was favorable.

I will be doing more research on a regular basis up until much nearer the time of the breeding, of course.

For now it looks very promising, and is already generating interest in the savvy Rottweiler community.
