Maia-spay-blood
« on: September 25, 2005, 10:08:23 pm »
This morning, Maia dripped some blood while eating so I felt her belly and came back with a bloody hand.  I wiped her stitches with a peroxide soaked paper towel and it didn't seem to be bleeding anymore.  But it was a lot of blood to have dripped on the floor and still get all over my hands.  She didn't seem tender or in any pain.  Should I worry, I'm going to call the vet but I just didn't want to seem like my normal freak self if it is normal.

She got spayed on Thursday, came home Friday, and played for the first time yesterday.

Side note:  Maia finally passed up 120 lbs, she is currently 16 months and 121 lbs.
Thanks,

Emily and 1 husband, 1 boy, 1 on the way, and 4 crazy dogs

Please get her checked.

PLEASE follow the inactivity instructions of your vet CAREFULLY.

I know a person first hand who lost her 4YO obedience show bitch after a "routine" spay. She blew a tie inside, and hemorrhaged and died day 4 post surgery..

Your minor bleeding may be nothing, but it's worth at least a phone call.

We are headed back to the vet this afternoon.  Thank you Red.  I wasn't sure if it was normal or could be serious.  I have kept her in her cage or with me while I've made Rocco stay outside since Friday.  Yesterday when I let them out to go potty he tackled her but she didn't act hurt so I didn't fret then this morning there was blood.  :-[
Thanks,

Maia is fine.  She just opened a pocket of blood that got trapped between the two sutured areas.  The vet says she had a good amount of fat tissue that got trapped between the layers of sucture so it might happen again.  As long as the blood is dark (old blood) and is gushing or flowing heavily she will be ok.

I am glad to hear that she is ok. I would have been so scared if it was zoey bleeding... A few days after zoey's spay, one of her stichs popped loose and there was a long green string just hanging out of her tummy. That was scary enough for me - blood would have terrified me.

She acts like nothing is going on.  She had a little  more bleeding last night but none this morning.  It was really hard keeping her down last night.  I had to take her out in the yard on leash so she wouldn't run around.  Rocco doesn't understand why his sister can't play.
Thanks,
