Hey Moni!
« on: October 27, 2005, 10:45:05 pm »
I was watching the video of Sanity watching the video of Tenchi,  ;D and I noticed the video called "Tenchi's Signs", which I somehow previously missed.

I just wanted to say that something about that video brought tears to my eyes - in a good way.  It was very touching to me the bond that you two have together and the steps that you have taken to make sure that you two can communicate and understand each other.

So, that's it - you guys rock and I love ya.  That's all!

Oh Marsi, that was so sweet!  You have me all choked up now.  Zephyr, Kida, Tenchi and Gyrl have all taught me that deaf dogs are awesome and can be as good as, if not better  in some situations, as hearing dogs.

I know that I'm always going to have deaf danes and aussies because I doubt that the aussie and dane breeders will ever stop breeding merle to merle or harl to harl.  The lucky pups need homes and the not so lucky need someone to speak up to try and save them from an early death at their breeders hands.

Thanks for your kindness Marci, it cheered me this am.  :)

Nina,
Here's a link to ALL my videos on youtube.. feel free to check it out.  :D

I'm glad the 6-pack can help spread the smiles.  :D  They are my life and entertainment.  LOL  Who needs tele when you have a pack to watch interact!

Oh yeah, I just realised that I should elaborate some since not everyone knows about deafness and the merle/harl genes.

Statistically speaking 25% of puppies from a merle x merle, harl x harl, or merle x harl breeding will be deaf and/or blind.  Breeders can stop this by simply breeding merle/harl to a solid based dog, but usually they don't and most of them just kill the mostly white pups(or in aussies, shelties, doxies, collies, catahoulas-the ones with mostly white heads).  That's why I said I'll probably always have deaf aussies and danes.  :)

Just a heads up.

Wow, the "Tenchi Signs" video is amazing... I want to teach my dog ASL signs too...

Do you use ASL? Or make up your own? I say you sign the letter 't' for treat... that is so cool...

props to you and tenchi... and the rest of your gang!  :)

Ang beat me to it. :)  The ASL "T" is for Tenchi.. but I didn't realized until he was about two that me shaking it meant that I was calling him a toilet!  lol

As for the other's I use a combination of ASL and obedience hand signals.  I try and do onehanded signs, just because usually I have a leash in the other.  Also, I use a lot of exaggerated body language and facial expressions until they pay attention to them.

The other night I was talking to Ang and told her that next time the boys play, I'll be working on teaching Tenchi a sign for Nee since they love each other so much.  I'm sure it might take a couple of visits, but its worth it!  :D

Gotta love those deaf dogs!
