Hi Everyone,
It's been a month since our beloved Guinness was taken back by the breeder due to his extensive eye problems and surgeries needed. We made the arrangement to get another pup from the litter born a month ago and yesterday we made the trip out to select a pup. It was kind of bittersweet - sad that we have to be doing this, but exciting at having a puppy again. There were ten pups to chose from, which would have been agony, but we decided to go with a short-haired male again, so that, thankfully, narrowed it down to three puppies. There was a short-haired male that was the spitting image of our Guinn, but it turns out that the breeder of the puppy's sire had just selected that pup for an RCMP officer in Quebec. I kinda think that was a mixed blessing, since if the new pup looked a lot like Guinn we might have had preconceived notions about his personality and behaviour.
So, it came down to two puppies and I don't know if you ever have had to decide between two puppies, but it's pure agony - almost like a scaled down version of Sophie's Choice. In fact, the breeder told us about a couple who spent 45 minutes trying to decide between a male and female puppy and when they couldn't decided to take both. I could relate. But, one of the boy's has a cute little monk's cap on his head and the sweetest, most gentlest eyes. Eyes that you could fall in love with. Not that the other little guy didn't but there was just a little spark I felt when I looked at him, so we ended up choosing him. He's five weeks old so we'll be taking him home in three more weeks.
We've decided on the way home to name him Gershwin, after George Gershwin. The story behind the name is that Gil and I got married in Manhattan, New York. When we were dating, we were huge Woody Allan fans and discovered one of our favorite movies is Woody Allan's Manhattan. The sound track to the movie is George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, which is one of our favorite pieces. So the name Gershwin seemed to be a great fit. Now here's the kicker. When we got back from selecting the pup, I was rereading a biography about George Gershwin and screamed when I discovered that our new puppy Gershwin shares the same birthday as his namesake - September 26th.
