Hubby is Home!!
« on: November 19, 2005, 12:02:30 pm »
Finally got Johann home last night about midnight. His train was supposed to get in at 7:10 p.m., but it got delayed about 3 times and didn't get in 'til 10 p.m. They said that, because of all the hurricane damage along the gulf coast there are still a lot of tracks and bridges that were wiped out so they've had to reroute a lot of freight trains. With so much extra traffic in the area, there are a lot more break downs along the route and a lot more delays than usual.

Luckily, I met a very nice lady at the train station who lives about 30 miles from Houma so we kept each other company while waiting for the train.

The dogs and cats were so happy to see him, although I had to keep most of them outside so they didn't jump on him.

We are planning on getting out of bed soon and going to the ER to get more  Vicadin and get his leg checked out.

At least he's home now and is in good spirits.

That's GREAT news!  It's all about healing from now on (and possible lawsuits :P)  Congrats on getting him home!!!

Thank goodness, Jeanne! I am so glad he is back home so someone who cares for his welfare can be in charge. Stick to your guns, girl, and make sure he gets what he needs, despite the company's incompetence and indifference.

YAY!!!  I'm so happy he got home safe and sound!  I know you were probably a nervous wreck waiting for him, I know I would have been.  BIG sigh of releif.  Now he can work on getting all healed and back to normal!

Well, this situation just keeps getting worse and worse. Here's a quick update from the ER visit. I'll try to make this short 'cause I need to get some sleep:

It seems he does not have a simple fracture, he has a compound fracture. His bone about 8 inches above his ankle has a spiral fracture, it's broken all the way through and displaced. He also has what looks like a more minor fracture about 4 inches below his knee. The big break is on his tibia, the small fracture is on his fibula.

Everyone in the ER - dr., nurse, nurse practitioner, radiologist, etc. all said he should have had this treated by now and he will most likely need surgery. The ER doc. said if he had come into the hospital with this injury fresh, they would not have let him leave. He would have seen an ortho specialist there and probably been scheduled for surgery w/in a couple of days.

They were all shocked and disgusted he had gone so long without 1)paid meds and 2)further treatment.

They referred him to a local orthopedic specialist and told him he needed to start calling that office at 8am and don't worry about work comp and their insurance. That will get worked out later. They told him not to eat anything after midnight in case the dr. wanted to do surgery tomorrow. That's how serious this is.

They gave him a shot of demerol and a prescription for percocet. He is in lala land now.

**NODOGNOW: I can't thank you enough for all of your advice. I would not have taken him to the ER today if you had not urged me to do so and I am so glad I did. I took pictures of his leg, looked at the x-rays myself and made sure I got copies of the doctor's notes and I will continue to do the same every step along the way.

Thanks, also to everyone else. You gave such great advice and your support through this whole thing is absolutely priceless. I'll post pix of his ugly leg tomorrow.

I'm so sorry this thread has nothing to do with dogs, but you guys are really invaluable to me.

OMG!!  This just keeps getting worse and worse for you and your husband.  I cannot believe they let him go in that kind of condition!!  I don't suppose there is a way that moving him around made the break worse, as in made it a compound from a simple fracture?

Well, now for sure you have got to put your foot up someone's arse.  Multiple people are now responsible:  Swift, their workmans' comp dept, the doctors, basically anyone you have talked to should be in BIG BIG trouble.  This is unacceptable, and I would think about suing.  Not that I'm sue happy, but this certainly complicates things for your husband.

Give your hubby a hug from me.  Good luck with his appt tomorrow, I hope they can get him into surgery quickly.  Get some rest, this looks like it is going to be a long, bumpy road.

Jeanna, I am so relieved that your hubby made it home...How awful for both of you that he was stuck there!!...I simply can't believe, once again, the complete disregard for life & suffering that goes on in the world...I don't think I will ever be able to deal with it!!!...I can't remember if you have gotten an attorney yet but please do so now if you haven't!!...The only way these big companies can be made to understand is hitting them in their bank accounts!!...Good luck & keep us posted!

Hi Jeanne,

WOW you need to get a list of everyone who saw your husband, especially the people in the First ER room. They are liable for MAL PRACTICE. Ask the orthopedist you are seeing now to compose a letter for your file about the injury and complictions caused from the NON- Attention and now call those Lawyers again. Once you have the names and letter from the orthopedic Surgeon in hand I bet you get a whole different response from the attorneys willing to take "your Case"

We have an appt. with the orthopedic specialist today at 1:00 p.m. I have spoken with the work comp. ins. rep. and she seems fine with that. I am definitely asking for and keeping a record of everyone I speak with, all the doctor's notes from every visit, etc. I will be trying to find a lawyer in Indiana today instead of So. Carolina so we can potentially sue the hospital, too because I agree the proverbial ball was dropped there as well.

Here are some pix of Johann waiting in the ER and his icky leg. You can kind of see where the bone is broken a few inches above his ankle (it king of pokes up there) and under his knee (another odd bend), but you can definitely see how swollen and multi-colored it is.
