Raw bones
« on: November 19, 2005, 06:10:32 pm »
Rocco swallowed two soup bones whole yesterday.  They were both decent size but obviously small enough to swallow.  Will his stomach digest them or will we be spending a few hundred at the vet because of the blockage.

He ate fine today but has yet to poop.
Thanks,

Eek, I have no idea, but I am giving it a bump so it stays near the top.  Hopefully someone will know...

He is eating and pooping fine but I don't look forward to the bone trying to come out his hind end.  He did throw up some food in his cage while I was out yesterday but hasn't thrown up since and he is acting normal.
Thanks,

It was cut.  I'll keep an eye on him.  Will it pass whole or will his stomach digest it a little?

I would think his stomach with digest some of it...bring him on a nice walk to get his system working and will encourage a poop to come out

Ok, we'll take an extra extra long walk today after work.  This ought to be fun.
Thank you for the advice and support

Update on Rocco.

Rocco passed the bone last night, it was painful and he kept looking at his rear end all night like something was trying to get it.
He threw up another bone, which I didn't know he had eaten this morning.  And now he is back to normal.  He is going to be on a rice, egg, and yogurt diet for a couple more days then he is good to go.
Thanks,

I'm so glad that Rocco is okay!  Usually they do fine on raw bones and since both passed safely, I guess that's true!

Well at least it is out...a good rule of thumb is use things bigger than their head so they cant swallow

You can also use hamburger and rice too if you want to for the diet

Anytime one of mine swallows something foreign or big like that, I give them a 1/4 cup to a 1/2 cup of Olive oil in a little bit of rice or kibble, it helps lubricate things- makes them more likely to pass gently.
