When to take Pyr off of Puppy Food???
« on: January 08, 2006, 09:57:31 am »
Hi All,
It's been a while.  Asking for a majority opinion.  When shoud Pyr's be taken off of puppy food.  Dyson is a week shy of being 8 months old and weighs 80 lbs.  Is it time to take him off of Pro Plan puppy food?  I was thinking about starting him on Nutro, but haven't made up my mind yet (suggestions?).  I will be posting new pictures soon, for he has loss his puppy fluff and looks like a big macho male Pyrenees now.

Thanks,
Randy

I switched Kiah over to adult food at 10 months old. I did this because I saw she was finally putting on weight and I didn't want her to gain weight too fast. Dyson's weight sounds perferct to me. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. I really thinks it depends on how he's doing with the puppy food and not gaining wieght too fast. I'm sure other pyr owners will help out here too. Can't wait to see pictures!!!

We switch our puppies to adult food at about 4 months old.  Doesn't stunt their growth - our Pyrs are HUGE and don't need any help in growing at all!!

When reading the Large Breed Puppy Chow bag, it says that large breeds are considered "puppies" until they are about 2. I assumed that meant they should be fed the puppy food until they are 2. Does anyone disagree with that, I'm reading here that it's ok to switch before then.

Lots of Pyr owners never feed puppy food or make the change at 4-6 months.
Lisa, owned by the following:
Sugar Bear - Great Pyrenees 4.5 yr.
Dixie Darlin - Great Pyrenees 4 yr.
Penny Lane - Great Pyrenees 2.5 yr.
Beauman - Great Pyrenees 14 months
Izzy - Great Pyrenees 14 month
Rosie - Great Pyrenees (at the bridge)

I'm reading everywhere that giants shouldn't be on puppy food or switched early to prevent growing too fast.  However, I don't know if that applies to pyrs or not.  His weight sounds good to me though.  Obviously you're doing a really good job with him!  And you had better post new pics soon.  That cute little ball of fluff is obviously growing up!

Slow growth is much better if you can manage it.  You certainly don't want the pup thin.  I grew out our Pyr pup and all our Lab pups on a good quality adult food, plus I supplement with Vit C which supposedly helps the joints grow optimally.   This on the advice of our vet and a good friend Lab breeder.  I've heard the same thing from many large breed breeders.

I would not leave your Pyr on puppy food until the age of 2...I switched Samson at 10 months I believe it was & Pippin was on puppy food an even shorter time...They will still reach their growth potential but won't grow too fast.

I am sorry to all for not posting new pictures of Dyson.  I will post them tonight when I get home.  Thanks for the advice on the food.  I have switched him to adult food and he loves it.
