homemade dog bisciuts
« on: May 16, 2005, 08:46:49 am »
Hi everyone,
while at this time I don't have a BIG dog myself (my fav-bullmastiff), I do
enjoy making dog bisciuts for my friend's Saint Bernards (she has 10 in
her kennel and 2 in the house, plus a bulldog who thinks she is a saint).
right now the recipe i use is off the cuff, and i try to be as healthy as i
can; however does anyone out there have a recipe for biscuits that has
really good (ie. healthy) ingredients.  i'm using bisciut mix and ground
beef (chuck ...they eat better that me ha!ha!)  i also add eggs and
sometimes oatmeal or corn meal.  they love them (i never have leftovers)
but i would like to make them more healthful.  anybody got any
suggestions??  thanks

This is the recipe for our dogs favorite biscuits.  We make them every 2-3 weeks.

1 pkg. dry yeast
1 tsp. sugar
2 cups all purpose flour

Accidently posted too soon!  I'll try again

1 pkg. dry yeast
1 tsp. sugar
2 cups all purpose flour
2 cups whole wheat flour
2 cups cornmeal
2 cups old fashioned oats (uncooked)
1 cup loosely packed fresh mint leaves (chopped)
1 cup loosely packed fresh parsley leaves
1/2 cup toasted wheat germ
1 can beef or chicken broth
1 cup milk

1.  Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.  In a small bowl, combine yeast, sugar, & 1/4 cup warm water - let stand 5 minutes.

2.  In a large bowl, combine flours, cornmeal, oats, mint, parsley, & wheat germ with wooden spoon.  Stir in yeast mixture, broth, and milk until combined.  Knead 1 minute.

3.  Divide in 1/2, cover 1/2 with plastic wrap and store in frig.  Roll other 1/2 to 1/4 in.  Cut with cookie cutter.

4.  Bake small size 30 minutes - large size 40 minutes.  Turn oven off - leave biscuit in oven 1 hour to dry out.

Our dogs start drooling when they see us start to make these :)

It makes a lot!  They get 2 or 3 a day and it lasts about 3 weeks.  We take extras to the dog park for their doggy friends too.  They smell sooo good when they are baking!
