Math homework help!
« on: January 16, 2006, 10:18:10 pm »
Ok it's multi-step inequalities.. .
I don't understand it, I just joined the class because I failed the 2nd semester last year so I'm retaking it. So, basically I forgot or I didn't get it last year. Anyone want to give me a hand?

Here's a problem I did and my answer, I'm pretty sure it's wrong.

-5x - (2x + 3) > 1
                      ¯
10x + -15 > 1
          -15   -15
         -10x > 16
           10  ¯ 10
            x=1.6

Ok I think i figured it out but i haven't done inequalities for awhile but i looked it up in my old calc book
if the equation is
(-5x) - (2x+3)>= 1  distribute the negative
-5x - 2x - 3 >=1     add like terms
-7x - 3 >=1     add three to both sides
-7x >= 4          solve for x
x <= -4/7

The sign changes because your multiplying or dividing by a negative number
subtracting doesn't change signs

if the -5x and 2x-3 are being multiplied reply and i'll tell you how to do it that way

if you need more help you can IM me at Ponygyrl87 or reply to this I hope this helps

I'm still in school I should know how to do it but now I over complicate the simple stuff......I'm now in multivariable calculus one of the times i'm asking what have I gotten myself into with an engineering major  ;D

I got the same answer
-5x - (2x + 3) >1
-5x -2x -3 > 1
-7x -3 > 1
-7x > 4
x < -4/7

I got an A in college math

Yeah distribution is important and remember like terms can be added and subtracted from both sides so the x's can be added or subtracted as well as the constants.

I'm now in multivariable calculus one of the times i'm asking what have I gotten myself into with an engineering major

I have a son who is graduating in May in engineering... .and I understand the verbs and the pronouns when we talk.   Everything else is a question mark????....I completely understand!  You have my sympathy!

My father was an engineer and a son is following in his footsteps..... what did I do wrong??? ;D ;D ;D ;D

8 -2 (b+1) < 12 - 3b=  distribute -2 (b + 1)
8 - 2b -2 < 12 - 3b combine like terms = 8 - 2
 6 - 2b < 12 - 3b   get like terms on side by addtion or substraction
-6         -6   =
-2b < 6 -3b   same thing as above
+3b      +3 =
b <6  and there is you answer

I checked it so this should be right.
