Try Walking One of These!
« on: January 24, 2006, 07:06:53 pm »
I looked up these pictures after seeing the first one in the insert of the new Gorillaz album.  These are pretty striking and troubling images and I thought they would be worth sharing since Hyenas are "dogs".  I guess in Lagos, Nigeria they have such a problem with people owing money, that "debt collectors" go around with these Hyenas as well as Babboons and Pythons and intimidate people into paying up.  I'm not sure that's the whole story but that's what I took from a few articles that I read.  These guys look like thugs that exploit and abuse animals for their own selfish means.  Although Hyenas are cruel scavengers in the wild, that's their place in nature and I feel sorry for them for being chained up and abused.  There's a photo essay and you can read more about this topic at:

How sad.  The animals are magnificent... but I agree:  they are not meant to be on a leash.  It's images like that that make me wonder about the future of our species.  We act like everything is here for our use and enjoyment with no regard to the other species that we share this in this spot in the universe.
