Six Toes
« on: January 26, 2006, 06:01:34 pm »
The vet told me (and now I can see) that Einstein has 6 toes -- PLUS dewclaws.  Is this rare?  Does it mean anything?  Like he's part lion or something?

Just curious,
Sarah

Although this is more common in cats, dogs can have extra toes too (in addition to dew claws).  It is called polydactyly.  Some breeds are more likely to have extra toes and some always have extra toes.  Unfortunately, I'm not sure which breeds those are! ::)

Well, I can tell you Lundehunds always have 6 toes.  In other breeds, I think it is just by chance.
