Performatrin Ultra.
« on: February 01, 2006, 07:46:04 pm »
For some reason the Solid gold line of foods cause Bubba to have frequent poops. And I'm wondering if that's not part of Bubba's loose stool issue. I thought I'd try something different, so I bought a bag of the Performatrin Ultra Chicken & Brown rice.

The ingredients look good to me.. other than the 'dried egg product', but it's ingredient number 11. So I guess it's not as bad. It's actually cheaper than the Solid Gold but it's made in Canada. So that's probably why.

I'm going to see how Bubba does with it over the next couple days. If it's not going to agree with him I usually see a sign within the first week.

Just curious if anyone feeds this food to their dogs, and how they are doing on it.

Ooops forgot the link. http://www.performatrinultra.com/dog/ddi_chicken.htm

That is what our boys were on for a bout... 2 months... we decided to not keep them on it, because zero was getting really really bad gas. they are back on Perscription foods from the vet clinic (as the b/f works there and gets cost)... I sell performatrin at our petstore (the one i work at- pet value). it seems to be one of the best foods, and best sellers. alot of people love it. and i find, when we had the boys on it 40lbs normally lasted about a week. on performatrin ultra, it was 2 weeks... so they ate less frequently. which was great!!!

Did Bubba ever show up with anything other than parasites? I believe you were going to ask about EPI and food allergies? With so much going on in the digestive system - switching food a lot can make it worse. Did you try venison? Iz did not test for EPI (thank goodness) and we have kept the same diet - and finally poop is normal! It just took a long time for the Hooks to run its course.... Is he itching at all? anything other than loose stool? I would also suggest adding yogurt to his diet somewhere - the bacteria cultures are good for the GI tract especially if he's been on a lot of medicine....

We are still doing the first wormer. Strongid-T.. It's his last dose today. Then the tech said to wait a bit before doing the broad spectrum wormer. How long of a break she didn't say. I was just going to give him a week and get the other stuff on Feb.10th.

His first poop was normal (firmish, lol) this morning, and the second one was a bit softer. The color of it is back to normal so far though. He's been having small but frequent poops. Which I believe it related to the small intestine, if I'm remembering correctly.

No venison yet, neither store had any in stock. But the Performatrin seems to be doing the trick so far.

Bubba did have hooks awhile ago but they didn't find anymore in this sample, just the tapeworm that I already saw. It's possible they missed some. Maybe that's why the multiple  doses of Strongid-T seem to be helping? Regardless we are going to try the broad spectrum stuff anyway. Just in case since I know worms can be stubborn to get rid of.

He is itching on and off.. but he has a flea allergy. We have a medicated shampoo that we use on him along with topical flea drops that does help. But I can't seem to get rid of the little buggers since I'm treating my pets, but the other pets in the house are not being treated. So I'm just managing to keep their numbers down. :( The itching has been going on since summer. So I'm pretty sure it's just the fleas causing it. But other than that... no other symptoms.

Forgot to add, I have been giving him yogurt.. just a small teaspoon once a day. Anymore than that and he gets the runs... again. LOL

Did the vet give you a wormer for tapes? Stongid-T never use to work for tapes (maybe they changed the formula) only for hooks and rounds.

I asked the same question. It does say on the bottle that it kills common tapeworms. But it needs to be given 2-3 times to get them all.

The Strongid-T they gave me says it's 'caramel flavored for horses'. I got a good chuckle out of that.  :D

LOL true. Who knew there was more than one kind.  :D

I wonder if the Drontal Plus is what they are calling the 'broad spectrum wormer'? I had a airheaded moment and forgot to ask. LOL

I have a Basset and a G. Dane.  The GD can eat just about anything & be fine.  However, when we got Holi (Basset), she was about 5 weeks old.  The 'breeder' (I use that term very loosely) already had the entire litter weaned & on a canned food with chunks of beef in it.  Holi was the runt & had soft stools, ate them, & vomitted regularly.  We took her to the vet several times, he scoped her, sent us to an internal spacialist & he did ultrasound, scope, & stomach biopsy.  After all that, the only conclusive resluts were: slow digestion & stomach doesn't shrink after emptying.  During this time, I tried several foods (including a fish based from the vet).  We would think things were going well & she would start vomitting again after about a month (if not sooner).  I never tried Solid Gold because of the very high cost.  It was very puzzling to all involved.  We eventually put her on "Best In Show" dog food and didn't have the diahrea and vomitting but they went out of business.  I finally settled on making her food myself.
She is now about 6 years old.  I buy Soujorner Farms (www.sojos.com) as the base & purchase a lot of veggies every month for chopping in the food processor.  The meat we mainly use is turkey & pork, substituted with a can of sardines a few times/month.  Twice a week everyone gets a raw pasturized egg.  Yogurt is served every morning and purchased enzymes go in every night.  When I started her on this, I did it instantly because I didn't want her on the harmful food any longer.  I have had great luck with this for a couple years now.  Regretfully, the poop-eating is a habit now.  We have tried many, many different things and cannot get her to 'leave it'.
I just found the Performatrin Ultra at Pet Valu yesterday.  I am in northern MD & it costs $35 for 30 lbs.  I am going to try it and see what happens.  I'm sticking with the lamb because I heard the top 3 food allergens for dogs are: beef, wheat, & chicken.
In comparing many dog foods, I narrowed my list to Perf. Ultra, Performatrin Natural, Nutro Natural for sensitive stomachs (chicken, rice, oatmeal), and Nutro Ultra.  Besides price, the main difference I found: because of all the good things Performatrin Ultra puts in their food, I will not need to add yogurt, raw egg, or separate enzymes; Nutro Ultra has all the same ingredients except the added enzymes and biotics; Performatrin Natural has many of the same ingredients but without the added biotics and enzymes but they do add glucosamin and chondroitin; Nutro Natural sensitive is chicken & I try to stay away from that when possible but I would feed it to a dog with general digestive upset.

I do not think you made a mistake in instantly switching foods because your pup was already having drastic issues.  Although, I might have fed basic oatmeal/rice/turkey for a week between the 2 foods to help clear the bad food out of his tract.
I wouldn't worry about adding yogurt to the Perf. Ultra because they already put that benificial bact. in the food.  I would definitely give it a month or 2 to see how things progress.
I have found one of the best thing to help skin problems on dogs is a raw egg; start with several times a week then back off after there is improvement.  Personally, I spend the extra money for the in-shell pasturized eggs.  Can't be too careful, right   ;)  Also, you can do oatmeal baths between the medicated ones (a handful of oatmeal in a stocking placed in hot water; add pooch when water has cooled enough).  I know from personal experience that it helps.
You can also try a product marketed under the name "Eqyss".  I recently came across someone recommending it for problem skin on horses.  It is very safe for dog, cat & human use.  They have shampoo, conditioner, & a spray for more frequent application.  Since I keep the animal shampoo in the shower, I have used it several times on my very sensitive skin without any rash or other reaction.  And it smells good, too    ;D

For anyone that doesn't have a Pet Valu in their area, the new Nutro Ultra is very similar.  I would just add enzymes/biotics [they can be purchased in health food stores or online, like at sojos.com].  Besides that, the biggest draw back to Nutro Ultra is the high protein content (26%) but that can easily be cut by adding soaked oatmeal.

I hope this information will help and reassure you that things will get better.
Best Wishes    :)

Bear has been on Preformatin Ultra for large puppy since about 2 mos of age. She is doing well and has not had any problems. I do add plain yogourt to her breakfast bowl...happy to hear others do to as I was not sure it was ok for dogs
