That's SO WRONG. 

The child needs to be seen by an allergist and properly treated, not have his dog given away! 

My sister and I developed allergies, including dogs, and I promise you we were entirely happy to have 5 years of desensitizatio n shots in order to keep our fur-sibs.

Not saying it is the case with this one but allergy shots do not always work.  Been there, done that.  I have allergies that are usually under control but there are times like right now when NOTHING seems to work. Fortunately for me it is not the dogs.  It is cats, birds, mold, perfumes/scents and a few others.  While I agree that most people dump the pet too quickly, there are times when there truly is no other choice.
