Canidae?
« on: March 09, 2006, 08:17:25 pm »
I saw an old post talking a bit about Canidae... I've been feeding Science Diet large breed and I have a feeling it is inferior.  Can someone clarify the differences for me?  Thanks!

I am not a fan of science diet. A lot of vets recommend it, but that is just because they practically bribe them to recommend it and many vets also make money by selling it in the office (my old vet even admitted so much to me). But in reality, science diet is not a good food at all. If you have researched what to look for in a dog food, you will know that two key things are to avoid foods that do not list meat as their first ingredient, and also to avoid foods that rely on by-products for their meat source. If you look at the science diet ingredient list, you will see that corn (which is not a great grain source) is the first ingredient, and the second ingredient is Chicken By-Product Meal, which is the only meat in the food. Science diet is one of those brands that spends all is money on branding to get customers and none of it on creating a good quality food.

I would deffinately reccomend you look into switching, but suggest that you are open minded about your choices (canidae is not the best one, just one of the best ones). I personally reccomend you check out some of the foods on the whole dog journal's recommended food list:

Let me clarify.  I feed the SD large breed Lamb and Rice...first ingredients are Lamb Meal, Brewers Rice, Rice Flour...howeve r wheat and corn follow shortly after so I know I can do better.

Thanks for the great advice and links.  I will do some further investigating and see what's available in my area.  You guys are so helpful and knowledgeable.
