What the Heck is this for?!!!

I am curious to know what the heck this hanging layer of skin under Newf's chins is for?  Even when they're really skinny, they have it!!!  Info please!

Hmm my best guess would be it's to protect the neck because usually in a fight animals go for the neck so all they'd get would be skin instead of the major vessels or maybe to keep the vessels there warm.  But I'm no expert.  I'll see if I can find anything else.

It's know as a 'dewlap' but as to what use it is, I don't know. Maybe it helps protect their jugular vein if they get into a fight? Lots of breeds of dogs have them.

Thanks, he is a happy fellow.  I always thought "dewlap" was the term for the hanging lower lip skin, or "drool spout" as I call it.  It makes sense that it's for protecting their necks in a fight.  It makes it difficult to get a decent sized collar on his neck!

Haha I know what you mean Kali gets mats from her collar and gets so itchy. And it's usually hard to find in her hair when you need to grab her.  And Drake is definitely styling in his summer cut.

It is a double chin, my mastiff Maia has it, her collar makes it stick out more.  It is so that they have more room to store up drool.

My Pyrs have that too...I've heard that that along with the huge mane are to protect their throat in a fight.

It seems to be more predominant in males, but other animals have it too, bulls, some antelope, zebras, lions, bulls, gosh not sure what else, but you see it other stuff besides dogs.
