Wierd question - why does my dog suddenly STINK so bad? ;)
« on: March 27, 2006, 03:21:24 pm »
Sadie had a hot date with Mr. Winslow this weekend. (Sorry Cowboy and Chester - don't be jealous ;)) Anyway the kids of course found the water and splashed around in it. Winslow managed to be civilized but Sadie wound up looking like 10 miles of dirt road. So we get home and I put her in the tub - she was too tired to fight back LOL. And ever since that bath she stinks like a dirty foot! I don't get it. I dried her off totally, her collar was off till she was totally dry and yet she's still smelling really funky. Don't get me wrong, she never exactly smells like a spring rose or anything but she's smelling extra special lately. Any thoughts?

Edited to add: Pics of the kiddos coming soon to a website near you ;)

If she's kinda fishy funky smelling check her for hotspots, usually above the base of the tail where the hair is the thickest. You can use your nose to find them, sounds gross, but hey, it's for your pup :)

I didn't even think of that. Good call. Gross call but good none the less ;)
Thanks!

Is she doing anything like licking her butt (more often than usual :P) or scooting on the floor?  Really funky smells could be blocked anal sacs as well.  I've never had to deal with them with our dogs, but one of our cats does have anal gland issues.  The best way I can describe the smell is like nasty, sweaty, funky, feet.  I'm sure there's a better way to describe it, but that's what comes to mind for me.

She's not licking and she doesn't seem at all uncomfortable, she just STINKS. But that is sort of how I'd describe the stink. Like crusty old nasty feet. Ewww... So what do I do if it's blocked anal sacs? Do you go to the vet for that? I'll check for hotspots too but I haven't noticed her scratching or biting anywhere and that's how I always caught it on my other pooches. Tis a mystery. A really gross and stinky mystery.

I agree with Dahlie...do her ears smell?  When Sasha is stinky it is almost always her ears. :P

Ok, whenever a thread is started, at the top and bottom of the page there are advertisers links that are "related" to whatever topic is at hand (I guess).  This struck me jr. high school funny (I suppose because it is on a DOG website).  Could THIS be her problem????

Hi,

Poor Sadie, I'd rule out the water, as Winslow was a wader also and fortunatly for me no Stink to speak of. You did mention that Sadie still hasn't firmed up in the stool dept!! So I'd lean toward the Anal gland ick. Most groomers and I know one close to you will do the nasty expelling job for like $10.00 bucks WELL WORTH THE INVESTMENT!!!

More times than not, it is ears or hotspot.  Especially after a romp in the water.

Everybody made good points and I think your smell problem has to be one of them:

1. Precursor to Hotspots
2. Ear Infection
3. Anal Sacs that need depressing (yucko!) groomers can do this as well as vets, we always have our groomer do it.

Also it could be her undercoat.  If she has been wet a lot lately, her undercoat could be rotting.  You can't wash the rotten fur out either.  Good luck finding the culprit, not an envious task.

Thanks for all the advice guys, stinky ears were the culprit. The vet sent me home a few weeks ago with ear cleaner just in case. She said she's never seen a Newfie not have ear issues so it was better for me to just have it on hand. We had to pick up Gus's prescription food yesterday and she tagged along to the vet with me and when I called it in the vet said, "Why don't you bring her in, we won't charge you for a visit?" Note to self - NEVER leave this vet. Anyway, she said it's pretty mild irritation and the cleaner should clear it up in a few days. She still stinks like a foot though ;)

Oh the joys of owning a water dog!
