My vote is male also. I love both but if I have more than 1 dog (or cat) I will  only have one female in the bunch. I have 3 male dogs and 1 female right now. The boys are goofy and try to be alpha, but the female rules the roost when she wants. We tried bringing in more than 1 female and it did not work.....they seem to never forget a grudge! Same with the cats, we have 1 and 1. All of the boys are much more laid back. My female dog is the most manipulative on the bunch, but I love her just the same!

Jenn,
I finally found the website for that North Carolina campground!! It has an off-leash park with pond, agility, rally obedience, classes, grooming and bathing, etc. If you go let us know how it is. It is in Rutherfordton, NC. Website:     www.4pawskingd om.com

I appreciate the responses..... .I was more hoping for personal experiences and places you have been and recommend. I have been on so many websites but I don't know places that are good. Thanks!

We are planning on getting a pop up trailer and eventually traveling with our dogs to various places. Since you guys are a wealth of information, I thought I would start a post on our favorite dog friendly spots and/or camping destinations. I heard there is a campground in South or North Carolina that caters to dogs. It has a dog park, agility equipment (I think) and pond for the doggies! Haven't been there but I hope there are others like that out there!

Excellent!!!! Give me some time and I will find some articles. I am on occupational therapist who works in the schools and have started to "specialize" working with children with autism. When I was an undergrad I did a pilot study with children with autism in a group home and a therapy dog. We unfortunately could only set up 1 visit due to lack of time but some of the result were amazing. One kid did not interact with any humans but as soon as he saw the dog, he lit up and ran to the dog! He would pet the dog and brushed it too.
Anyway, I think the Delta Society website would have links to articles and I will look too. Animal assisted therapy is one of my career goals so I am very interested in what you come up with. By the way, what area do you live in? I am in the Chicagoland area.

Thanks for the info. He is going to be 1 year old on July 11th! Magoo has multiple beds to sleep on...including the couch but prefers mostly to sleep on the hard ceramic or hardwood floors.Even in his crate Magoo will push the padding away and sleep on the plastic. He is on Eagle Pack Holistic Adult food which probably does not have any beets, but I will check! Magoo is constantly chewing on toys, playing with his 3 other siblings, and drinking water so I guess that could be irritating it too. It does seem to bother him but it bothers me! Again thanks for the info and anymore you come up with......I knew if I posted the question here I would get some good responses.!

Saint Bernard General Discussions / Chapped Chin??

My Saint Magoo has redness on his chin and jowls. Does anyone know what this is from? He is not a big drooler but of course drools water all over his chin when he drinks. Am I just not wiping his chin enough? Or could it be partly because he sleeps with his chin on the floor and it may be irritating it? Anyone have any suggestions for geting rid of it? One of these days I will be able to post pictures.....I hope. Thanks for any info.

I agree about rescueing a dog. I have 4 dogs......3 are mixes and one rescued Saint. The Saint is "the baby" at only 10 1/2 months old. Are dogs range from 50 pounds to 115 (and growing). It is funny because they are "stackable" dogs. They all fit under each other....if that makes sense. Anyways...back to the point. Any dog can be a good companion for your Saint. It just depends who both you and your current dog click with. Let your dog pick out the dog once you have it narrowed down. I will never go back to having just one dog because, for me, I love seeing the bond grow between the dogs and the play. They are never lonely. That is my 2 cents!

I am fairly new to this board. I mostly read and laugh! I have 4 dogs, the newest "little one" a Saint Bernard. My other dogs also won't drink after Magoo has left the water dish (actually dishes....he likes to drink out of ALL of them, not empty one at a time). One of my dogs will eat poop.....but not drink water from a slimed dish. Go figure! We have resorted to filling our water dishes a third of the way so we don't waste so much water. Yes we are constantly changing the water....but I don't see another option! Are we ruled by our dogs or what! ;D

Hello. I am new to this board and new to the giant breeds. Two weeks ago we adopted a 9 month old Saint Bernard (Magoo) from a Saint Bernard rescue. He is adorable and we love him so much. He gets along so well with everyone and all of our other dogs.....We are hooked on the giant breeds.
Anyway....I have a question about food and supplements. He was on adult food when we adopted him and are switching him over to our adult Wellness food that our other dogs are eating. It does not have glucosamine and chondrotin for joints in it but we started give him a supplement. I don't know if we should continue for preventative purposes or if it is not good for him this early. I have heard no supplements for puppies.
I thought, who better to ask than others with giant breeds! :) Has anyone given their puppy these supplements or later? What do you guys think? Thanks for any info and thanks for starting this site!
