Treatment & Preventative Meds / Re: Fleas and Ticks Meds

I sent my husband out for Frontline (from the vet) and he came back with Sentry Pro by Sergeant's (from PetSmart).  We have always used Frontline.  Does anyone know if this stuff works?

I agree with Softhug - at most, make it a family dog.

I always thought of the family dog as MINE (we got her when I was five) and my mother was in for a shock when I moved out and took the dog with me.  There was no way I could leave without her, she was my best friend.  Unfortunately, my mom kept her affection toward the dog low key, and we didn't find out until the last minute that our plans for the dog were different.

It's better to be totally up front with them right from day one.  That way, you won't have any battles down the road when everyone has already bonded and thinks the dog belongs exclusively to them.

Good luck.  I'm sure your girls are not nearly as bratty as I was.

Spinone Italiano Discussions & Pictures / Re: spinone?

On a related note, how can I be sure she is a reputable breeder?  She really sounded nice on the phone, but I know that's not enough.  People say, "do your research."  How do I do that exactly?  She does not advertise on the web and I don't know anyone with a spinone.  She did say that I was welcome to come visit (which I plan to do if we move forward).

I'm back looking for breeder tips.  I have contacted two different administrators of the Spinoneus.org site, but have not received a response.  According to the site, Spinone Club of America is the American Kennel Club (AKC) Parent Club for the Spinone Italiano in the United States.  There are currently two breeders that I am interested in, but I still don't know how to get info.  Maybe I could call and ask to speak to past families who have purchased puppies from them?  Should I just assume they are reputable?

Thank you for the responses.  I'll be sure to keep an eye on him for the next week or two.  I love being able to come here for advice.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / kennel cough exposure

Okay, we just came back from a walk.

My old dog was sniffing and "playing" w/a 4 mth old bull dog.  After about five minutes of us hanging around, the dog growled at Jasper.  I mentioned that it was cute, because he was such a baby.  The owner replied, "Oh, he's not growling.  He has kennel cough."

She didn't realize it was contagious.  She did say her pup has been on medication for 24 hours after I said that just like kids, he probably isn't contagious after being on antibiotics for 24 hours.  I hope she was telling the truth.  We are probably okay, right?  It was really five minutes of contact at most.

Is there any way you can block off the room where you are eating?  Could you use, for example, a door, a gate, or a verbal command?  Our rescue never came near our kitchen when we were cooking or eating for the first year he lived with us.  And like Kelly, he had no handouts from us until dinner was over and dishes were washed at put away.  This also helped with him being underfoot during "rush hour."

Then we started remodeling one room or another (including the kitchen) and as a result, we began eating in different areas of the house.  As we pushed into other rooms with our food and food smells, Jasper began to show an increasing interest in our food.  He didn't start all-out begging until recently, when we started feeding him people food; but if you look at the pattern, the dog out of the room was the best situation for all of us (including the dog).

"Leave it" and "take it" are not part of Jasper's vocab.  He had already lived a long life when we first brought him home.  The only command I have been able to get across is "sit" and that only works if I am holding a treat over his head.  When he backs up to look at it, he automatically sits.  This now works w/out the treat, but I still need to hold my hand closed over his heard.

How do you train an old dog?  We worked on "stay," for more than a year, rewarding heavily w/positive reinforcements, but he never seemed to get the hang of any verbal commands.

We have been able to "potty train" him, which I think is a big accomplishment for an adult dog who apparently had never lived in a house.  We also have taught him how to come up and down stairs and go in and out of a doggie door.  He even figured out how to open the inner door that leads from the outer doggie door himself.  He uses a pull handle that had been screwed into the bottom of the door years before, for some mysterious reason.  He sticks his paw inside the handle and pulls it open.  Now he lets himself in and out whenever he wants.

He also did an excellent job of training us to "hop to" if we are late feeding or walking him.

Thanks LMM,

He has made the switch and we did have some of his old food leftover to mix in for a few days.  He was very grumpy to see the cat food missing, though.  We have started to experiment w/people food supplements (some of which he is happy about), but he is starting to get a bit obnoxious around our dinner.  He now feels entitled to any people food, even if it is on someone else's plate!

We love greenies, but now you all are getting me nervous.  What else do people use that is easy and relatively neat?

Moose is the cutest puppy ever!

Of course, I have said something similar at least 10 times this week since I tripped over this board.  It's a good thing my husband is insisting on a spinone because I have fallen in (again and again) with danes, mastiffs, otterhounds, bernies, you name it.  I have even drafted letters to various breeders and rescue groups and caught myself just before sending them.

The enthusiasm on the board is so contagious.  It's no wonder many of you have several loves.

I guess I just love anything snuggly w/big feet.  I even married one.

I'm back from PetSmart w/40 lbs of Nutro Ultra for adults.  Their rep found me while I was looking around w/my list I printed from Shangrila and "sold me" for about 10-15 minutes.  I tried to tell her I was already convinced and I just needed to find it, but she was not letting me go until I heard everything.  She wanted me to go w/the senior formula, but I stuck w/adult because it had a higher protein count.  She also gave me a coupon worth $2.00 off.  She mentioned there were no byproducts which she said were intestines and hoofs.

It made me smile to come home and see LuvmyMal's post.

I agree w/Softhug.  Grey is gorgeous!

Shangrila,

You were right on with the weight (Jasper is about 67 lbs).  I tried to get around the budget question because I never really added it up.  However, even if my 40 lb bag is dirt cheap (no price tag available), I am already spending $.50 per day on his canned cat food alone.

I did go and pull the ingredients listing from his current dog food, Hannaford Healthy Mix.  (This is supposedly the generic equivalent to Purina Beneful.)  The top ingredients are ground yellow corn, chicken by-product meal, soybean meal, corn gluten meal, whole wheat, and corn syrup.  Then we move to beef tallow, beef, water, animal fat, etc.

His can of chicken and gravy cat food (one can twice per day mixed in w/his dry)lists water, meat by-products, and then chicken as the third ingredient.  I don't know why chicken is not the #1 ingredient in a can of sliced chicken and gravy.

I am reluctantly going to explore what the meat byproducts might be.  I am really hoping the dead dog in dog food thing is a big misunderstandi ng.  Wouldn't the euthanasia drugs show up if horsemeat were used?

Thank you for all of your hard work researching this issue.  I will look to see if Canidae is sold near me.  Do you have any other dry foods to recommend?  I don't need the breakdowns, just a couple of names in case Canidae is hard to locate.

Since I follow a modified Atkins diet (meat + chocolate), Jasper would probably also benefit from some carb reduction.

Have a good day!

Marty,
Thanks for the advice.  Your Rosie is absolutely beautiful!  I like her other shots, too.  A regular model, that one-
