I am so jealous.  I would love to live so close to the ocean.  I am rather landlocked here in Kentucky.  Nice lakes, but no ocean.  Looks like you all had a grand time! Loved the pics!

Tis funny, while I've been watching, I've seen warthogs, 6 ostrich, a herd of elephants inc. a bull and a baby, a herd of gazelle, various birds and bugs and thoroughly enjoyed it.  Went to show my husband, we watched for 5 minutes (as long as he could sit  still) and nary a thing came by for a drink.  Same thing happened with my daughter..... oh well.  Problem is, I'm not sure they believe me.  It is just way too cool!  I can't wait to show my daughters boyfriend.  His grandparents were missionaries in Botswana!  He'll believe me!!

My living room looks like a 2 year olds playroom at a daycare center!!! Toys all over the place.  Webster plays with anything for about 3 minutes, then is ready for something else!  I am glad I took a few weeks off work, he is hard work, but pure entertainment!  Big Bro Riley just tolerates him at present, but I think they will become good buds.

Goldies are such smiley faces!  My Riley is 3yrs old and I don't think I have a single picture of him with his mouth closed!  What a happy house you must have with these 3 smiling faces about!

He really is an adorable little pup.... it is me getting older.  I wouldn't change a thing about him at this stage.

I grew up with assorted small dogs. My main preference was long hair! After I married, I was researching "family" dogs, found newfoundlands, and was hooked.  We also have a golden retriever, just over 100 pounds, heart of gold.  (he just isn't a newfie)

It sounds like most of us have had truly wonderful, memorable dogs in the past.  My first newfie, Hightower, was what I thought the smartest dog in the world and as close to human as possible.  He helped me raise 4 children and was the light of all of our lives.  He lived to be just shy of 14 years and passed away about 4 years ago.  I now have a golden retriever, (3 yr/o) also smart as a whip and a joy to be around, but I just never got that same "feeling" as I had with Hightower.  Besides, he is definately my husbands dog.  Now, I have my little Webster.  I've just had him a week, and I don't know if it is b/c I am so much older or what, but this is an ACTIVE little sprite (when he is awake).  He yips and yaps and bites and has to be entertained to be kept out of trouble.  We are crate training....bu t he has to come out sometimes, and when he does, he is just into everything! Some of it cute, some not so cute.  I don't remember much activity when Hightower was a pup, of course that was 18 years ago.  Someone PLEASE tell me he will become a "gentle giant" at some point!  The good news is, he appears to be potty training very well.  0-1 accidents/day.

I don't think my first newf, Hightower, barked at all until he was 10 or 11 years old.  This little 8 week old Webster of mine barks A LOT!! I kinda prefer the quiet.  This is a little yippy bark that I hope he grows out of .

Newfoundland Discussions / Sleeping too much?
« on: September 27, 2005, 03:20:30 am »
Is it normal for newf pups to sleep 20 hours a day?  I remember with my first newf, Hightower, calling the vet twice in the first month I had him home about how much he was sleeping.... all was well.    That has been almost 18 years ago.  Now Webster is home, 8 weeks old, went to the vet yesterday for round two of shots and deworming, Vet said he would sleep a lot....but geeeeez.  He is up and playing hard for 30 minutes, then just flakes for 4 hours.  You can't hardly wake him up.  I pick him up to put him in his crate, he will open his eyes, but just has that "please just let me sleep" look.  Then up again, eat, poo, pee, play and within 30-45 minutes is back sound asleep!  (he was awake and very playful last night from 3:00-4:30am though!) Just like a newborn baby!  This is all okay?  Right?

Webster just got home from his first vet check, (since I've had him, anyway),  yeasty ears!  I hope that is not a prelim for things to come.  I had a cocker spaniel with chronic ear infections, it was a misery.... for the dog and for me.
