Helpful Groups & Dogs in Need / Re: Another New Foster Mastiff
« on: September 21, 2006, 05:55:26 am »
We are meeting Saturday at noon to get our boy- his name is Hercules, and he is being driven halfway by his Mom, who is very heartbroken at having to give him up due to her recent health issues, and having to move to a second floor apartment with no elevator.  She is happy that he is coming here to have room to run and play, and have others his size to play with.  Of course she is already trying to convince me to keep him.

What rescues do you work with? Is it what's listed on your signature?

Yes- the ones in my signature.  Mastiffs Unlimited is a local club, and as a group, we all volunteer under FORM for rescue.

We are planning to go pick up our latest foster this weekend.  He is a 17 month old neutered male apricot mastiff.  Updates to follow.

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Re: would a muzzle work...?
« on: September 20, 2006, 12:56:21 am »
Personally, I would avoid the muzzles, as the dogs would be very resentful of being muzzled, and may associate that feeling and having to wear the muzzle to the other dog, causing MORE issues rather than fixing it.  If you have someone who can help you, I would take both dogs out for a nice walk on a trail somewhere that would be new and exciting for both, and let them see each other the whole time, but not let them be close enough to fight until they each give you an indication that they are curious, but not aggressive.

Transporting & Traveling With Dogs / Re: Hotels that allow big paws??
« on: September 19, 2006, 01:35:10 pm »
When we went to Toledo with Imani (mastiff), we stayed at a Comfort Inn, and they had no problem with her staying with us.    We called first and checked of course; and when we got there, they had a convention going on and all the first floor rooms were taken, so they gave us a free upgrade to a suite on the second floor because of the "inconvenience" of having to go down one floor to take her out to potty.  The room was not a bad one, it had two full sized beds, it was very clean and comfy, though not quite the Ritz.

Wow- I had no idea there were so many of us on here with hubbies who drive for a living- my hubby drives from home to and through NYC daily with a truck load of groceries.  I hear it from him daily- people are IDIOTS on the roads!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Re: Any Ideas?
« on: September 16, 2006, 01:57:13 am »
Wow! She does look a lot like the pup you posted pics of, except her muzzle is way narrower.  She is pretty small, under 12 inches at the withers.  The owner says she is pitt/shepherd, but I just don't see either of those in this little girl.  Of course, they obtained a 3 yr old male pitt, and plan to breed the two, in hopes of some "cute pups we can sell".  ARG!!!!

Can anybody give me any ideas on what this girl might be?  I know for sure she is NOT what her owners claim she is.

Great Dane Discussions / Re: Does Neutering Stunt Their Growth???
« on: September 12, 2006, 11:53:52 pm »
All I can tell you is what I have heard from many mastiff owners- neutering them early tends to give them more of the female look, in the face and size of their heads.

Old English Mastiff Pictures / Re: Hi..I'm Marley
« on: September 12, 2006, 05:48:28 am »
Welcome, Lori and Marley.  I am Margaret, and I am owned by Imani and Frankie, English mastiff half sisters, and Jesse, our rescue boy who is, to the best of my knowledge, English mastiff and Neapolitan mastiff mixed.

Wow! They are gorgeous!  Can you tell me how they are different from each of the other mastiff breeds?  They look very much like English, and even very close to bullmastiffs.  What is the adult size range?

I don't think you need to worry about extra nipples.  My english mastiffs, Imani, has 9, and Frankie has 11.

Are you sure it wasn't simply a case of running out of paint before they got her finished? LOL  She is one fine looking lady in my opinion.
