Sorry, I'm new to the board.  Didn't know I had made an error and didn't really look at the date of the last post.  Will be more vigilant in the future.
Sorry for causing a disruption,

Also timely feedings establishes that you are the alpha and she needs to depend on you for the things she needs so will make her more compliant to please you.  Just my thoughts,

If he's ten weeks thewn don't worry about his having accidents, it's going to happen.  Just keep taking him out after drinking, eating and off times often.  Praise him like crazy for doing what he's supposed to do.  Make going out a fun experience.  Carrots are a good reward for puppies.  I flunked crate training but I'm not crazy over shaking the penny can at him for howling.  It's meant to be a secure happy place they enjoy going not a scary thing.  He's a baby, he'll get over the howling.  Most danes don't leave mom until 12 weeks so he's a little early to have been seperated.  As far as free feeding, I wouldn't do that either.  Sets up a bad expectaion for when you need to cut him down to two meals a day.  It's true, puppies usually don't bloat so free feeding is not my worry here but getting him used to three feeding a day I think will better serve him.  Good luck, he's just a dane puppy.  Welcome to puppyhood, lol,

My husband took a bar stool, cut the legs off to the right height.  Screwed a big bowl into it and we put a smaller bowl in it to feed, lol.  Talk about cheap but it's great.  We have it at the vacation house.  Here we feed him on a foot stool that seems just right,

I agree with all the above said but they can be quite costly in health care compared to a mut.  I've owned Danes 28 years and that's the one thing I let potential owners know right away.  Once you have a Dane you'll never want to be without one ever again but they can drain you on maintence so be aware of that going in. Make sure you only look at litters where the breeders have done hip x-rays on the parents and genetic testing.  Don't buy from back yard breeder who has done no testing.  I have bought from back yard breeders twice.  One girl lived to be 12 but the only thing she could eat for 11 years was ground beef and rice or her intestines would bleed.  The other haqd major congenital problems and ended up costing us $40,000 in trying to maintain jher health but we loved her dearly.  She only lived to be 4.  The two I have had from reputable breeders have had normal health so check out the breeder and what they have done to test the parents of the litter.  Good luck,

I'm very sorry you are in this situation.  If you're going to give him away I suggest you call the nearest rescue and turn him over to them.  They will find a home without children for him.  Again, so sorry for the situation,

Bernese Mountain Dog Discussions / Re: Potty Training
« on: October 15, 2007, 09:34:24 pm »
They are all different.  My Modoc, is a Great Dane, and he was not potty trained until he was 6 months old.  I'm sure you already have a regiment  but it sounds like it needs to be revived..  We had to do that with Modoc., The dog door was so far away from thhe living area that if he went there we would neveer know.  You need to start taking him out on 1/2 hour breaks and telling him to go Potty.  Modoc is so used to trraveling iin an RV now that he goees potty on command on a leash but you're dealing with a six month old so justt keep taking him out every half hour and rewarding him for going potty.  Use treats.  I know my last dane peed in the house until she was 6 months then one day it just stopped, I hope the same for you,

Oh my, when I previewed it didn't show up, anyway we went to Petsmart to replace a collar that  had broken.
We're on a three week RVV trip.  I saw this oboxious ball that is so loud it is unbearable.  Of course, I bought it.  We put it in the bathroom at night and give it back to him in the morning.  He gets so excited when he gets it back, lol,

Since Kain didn't bite Modoc back last time, not that he had a chance, we're going to muzzle Modoc on their meeting for Kain's safety.  We will be within two feet off them so there is no way we will allow Modoc at a disadvantage with a muzzle on but since Modoc was the aggresser last time then we'll make sure Kain is protected.  Thanks forr all the good ideas.  We'll use them all,

Great Dane Discussions / Problem, would like recomendations-long
« on: October 12, 2007, 11:39:01 am »
When Modoc was two, he was on a leash in Mexico on the beach.  A rottie (with a bridle on but not attached to the leash) charged him and attacked him.  The owner had a baby on his chest in a carrier and couldn't interviene.  The rottie didn't mind anyway.  Nat was trying to seperate them by grabbing Modoc's leash back and trying to grab the rottie's bridle and throw him off.  The rottie bit down to the muscle on nat's arm and took him down.  Modoc immediately picked the rottie up and pulled him off Nat and took his paw and held him down.  He wasn't biting the rottie just had him by the neck and held him still.  Finally he was able to get Modoc to release and kicked the rottie out of the way and headed back to the RV for an ER visit.  Modoc was not hurt.  Anyway after this event Modocc got dog aggressive anytime a dog woud approach us.  He's been in sevral dog obedience courses and does fine with the dogs in there.  We had a behaviorist out sevral times and went through 8 weeks of training with her too.  It has helped.  He also was put on NILF. She said Modoc was diffinate;ly not dog aggressive. that now he just gets so excited when he sees dogs he can barely control himself.  In another communbity we have a Great Dane Gathering  once a year so we took Modoc to Denver (we live in CA) and he got along with 16 of the 18 danes.  Totally fine.  Our frinds, who have two danes invited us for dinner.  He got a long fine with the 8 year old and thought he was getting along with the 6 year old rescue show dog they had had for one year and then he went and stuck his paw on his head and the show dog (who was intact) too exception and Modoc grabbed him by the neck again and took him down, just like the rottie.  He went to the vet but was put on antibiotics just in case but just had one bit mark because Modoc was just holding him down.
Now  the problem.  This couple is coming,, next week (which we're really excited about, but they are bringing their two danes and we don't know how we're going to handle two danes that may not like each other.  We're goig to introduce them slow outside.  Got any othr suggestions for while we're sitting around in the house?
Long, sorry,
jeri
Modoc is the most gentle dane I've ever had with people.
