WOW I remember Rufus!!  Great dog!!!!!

Congrats on your prospective litter!  I don't see a problem on breeding before completing a championship. If its a good cross its a good cross.  If the timing is right and all else is good to go better to go with a live cover.  AI, particularly in maiden bitches, actually has a pretty high failure rate- more so than a live cover.

A mentor really is important as they have the expertise and knowledge that a newbie just doesn't have.  Choosing a puppy for show/breeding has to come with the commitment to change your mind should the puppy not mature as you wish.  There are a lot of dogs, even with championship titles, that really are not breeding worthy.  And a mentor can be very valuable in this area.  Including deciding when to purchase a puppy or whether to lease a bitch.  Leasing is a great option and a safer bet but NO breeder is going to lease a top producing bitch either.

Puppies are chosen at 3-4 weeks all the time. Even show prospects. In my current litter the show prospects are already chosen and they are 3 1/2 weeks old.  In the past my accuracy rate on the show prospects has run 95%. And when someone is choosing their pup the breeder will usually advise on which one NOT to pick.   Now you do have to keep an open mind and realise that even the best puppy doesn't always turn out as an adult. And that is why there are puppy show contracts where the pup is guaranteed to remain a show and prospect to lessen the risk.

SIGH  Puppy pics!!  Love her name but isn't it too long for AKC registration?  They limit the number of letters in a name

It really shouldn't do any harm other than maybe an upset tummy.

My dogs love bananas and crushed pineapple in their food will stop some dogs from eating poop believe it or not.  My dogs also love blackberries, apples, pears, peaches, tomatoes, potatoes, broccoli, carrots etc  and green salads too.  I give a huge variety of things starting from puppyhood and as a result the pups rarely have diarrhea from food cause they are used to a multitude of foods.

Make grooming a fun time with lots of praise and treats  Only do a little at a time but also have a second person so he can't run away.  For tangles and mats - cut them out  He is not a show dog and it is far less traumatic.  You also can use a detangler to help get knots out. My dogs will almost fight to be the first one on the grooming table and sometimes will get up 2 at a time- they LOVE being groomed.  And if a table is not handy all I have to do is pick up a comb and I will have a herd around me to get brushed/combed.

I love the black brindle!  Beautiful color although you don't see them in the show ring so there must be a prejudice against that color for showing at least.  It's going to be hard to pick- they are all adorable

I have PBGVs and they change colors all the time.  WhoShe was born black and white then went tri then went orange and white and is now back to sable and white with her black hairs coming back in- she is just 2 years old.  The only color that won't change are the orange and whites- if born O&W they will stay that color for life.

Sounds like you did the right thing.  Unfortunately orthopedic problems are rampant in Newfies and like in this case many times genetic problems do not show up until there is more than one litter on the ground.  Having OFA certification on parents/ grandparents etc does not necessarily guarantee that problems won't show up - it only lessens the risk.  One day they will have genetic markers but for hip and elbow dysplasia that is a long way off as it is multiple genes that contribute not just one.  Sorry for your pups problems and two together is quite a blow!

It is a common practice for those Pyrs working livestock to get milk straight from the spigot so to speak.  My dogs love it and whenever the mom of a litter has pups I give milk to her as well.

'Why not choose one that's as healthy as you can reasonably afford?'

I agree and that is what was said.

"So the best advice is to feed the best you can afford and the food that your dog does well on".

And my post was not directed to Lily's mom- it was in response to a discussion about prevalent brands like Iams etc which is what this discussion was originally about.  The determining factor in dog food choices should always be first how well the dog does with that particular food.  More expensive does not always equate to better

Me too- my dogs are free fed and stay on the thrifty or lean side.  But there is a difference between lean and hip bones that stick up like a cows!  If your dog isn't maintaining a healthy weight on a certain food it really doesn't matter how much you spent on that brand- its time to change.
