Great Pyrenees Discussions / Re: should I adopt a great pyrenees?
« on: July 21, 2005, 10:40:12 pm »
Do they really run off any time they are not on a leash? Like even out the front door on the way to the car they have to be leashed? That's how my huskies were but I never pictured pyrs being like that for some reason.
Nigel pretty much has to be always leashed. Zoot has never needed a leash. I can walk with him through crowded streets and he'll stay by my side off-leash. I LOVE that.

Yeah, I think what my boyfriend said out loud was about fluffy hair but what he really meant was can we handle another dog right now... he is a dog lover like me who is asleep as I speak with 3 dogs in his bed, I don't think it's a hair issue!
We are about to move back in together (long story) so if I get a new dog it is his too, and I think he wanted our next dog to be a joint decision. We both know we are going to end up with about 10 dogs, but with just getting back into living together I need to remember to be respectful.
I have to just have faith that we can help Ranger out of a tough spot and something will work out for him.
 :)

Ok good. I just don't want to get in over my head out of excitement!

Ok. After a long conversation with boyfriend, I realize I can't keep him. I am getting ready to move and my next few weeks are going to be chaos!
What I can offer for Ranger is that I can be the one to pick him up, and I could conceivably keep him for a few days. If it turned out that he was very mellow and housebroken and healthy, I could take care of him for longer. Otherwise it would be really difficult in my current apartment! I don't have a crate big enough for a Pyr! So if we could quickly find a home or a rescue group willing to take him, that would work best for my current situation. If this happened 2 weeks from now it would be smooth sailing!
In the morning I am going to call the shelter. Most likely they will want to send him directly to a vet to be neutered so I wouldn't be able to pull him right out anyway. They might be able to get his shot records if he was an owner surrender, and if they have more information it would really help me with the planning. If I get him out under the name of ... (who I do some work with) his adoption fee might be discounted. Hopefully!
There is a Pyr Rescue in Tennessee who takes in mixed breed pyrs, I'll give them a call in the morning and see if they are willing to help out.
Anyone else have any ideas? Like I said, I am still more than happy to be the one who gets him out of there and keep him a few days. But just getting him out could be more complicated than just handing them a check and walking out with the dog!
I know it's getting late, but I will check back and see if someone wise can help solve this dilemma!

Wow, I wonder why they never called me back?
Ok, I am trying to work this out... my friend in the rescue group here gave me some advice and ideas of what I am getting myself into, and my boyfriend is already worried about lots of white hair so this isn't going to be as easy as I thought!!!
More as soon as I figure things out...

AAAHHHH!! I am still waiting on a call back from the shelter!
When I called I asked how many days he had left and the receptionist didn't know, and she said they had a lot of calls about the pyrs, and I told her I would be happy as long as somebody saved him (but of course I would like it to be me)... and she kinda said something like they'd keep me in mind, and that someone would call me back... maybe they are just very busy? Or maybe I misunderstood and she said she'd call me only if no one else adopted him?? I just don't know!
I looked at a map and I really think that place in Kentucky is maybe a two hour drive from here at most. If I don't hear back today I'll call first thing in the morning and go get him if I can.
I will definitely let everyone know as soon as I hear anything!

1687
Ok, I just spoke with the shelter and they do not accept credit cards, and the receptionist wasn't sure if Ranger was still available because they have had so many calls! So someone is going to call me back when they have time. What a network we have here!!!!

Wow. Thanks for all the info. They are truly stunning dogs. I've had Siberian Huskies before so I am all too familiar with white hair on everything I own, (years later I am still finding husky hair in my belongings), and they were also the type of dog to take off out the door if they got loose and choose not to hear me calling them back home! That does present a challenge which I will have to think about. My new house has a fence but I think it is only 4 or 5 ft high. Hmmm...

This just in, looks like I am going to go rescue this pyr mix called Ranger and let him live with me for a while, so I will see how it goes! I guess he's half Pyr so it will be interesting to see what his personality is like! I am excited and I'll definitely read that article and do more research!
Thanks for the help!!

Yeah when do I need to pick him up? If they take credit cards, I can manage the fee but otherwise I'll need assistance. I'm getting ready to move into a new house and all my cash is going towards the pet deposit!!! LOL!!
I am so excited!
I have two huge bags of dogfood in my trunk that were just waiting for my next foster dog!

1690
Ok. If whoever is taking them across the country can only manage two at a time, here's what I could do: I could grab the mix (Ranger) and just bring him down to Tennessee and either keep him (did I just say that?) or foster him for a while. If y'all need me to do this, let me know. I love adventures.

1691
How many of them are getting out of jail? I don't know how many pyrs will fit in my 4 door car! But then again, stuffing them into my car will probably make them happier than being in the pound! Whoever is the grand master of this plan let me know how I can help out. Best possible scenario sounds like if they could go to a pyr rescue group who has lots of experience with this breed, but I will sure help if I can!

Great Pyrenees Discussions / should I adopt a great pyrenees?
« on: July 21, 2005, 09:19:25 am »
Ok, lately as you all know it seems like there are so many great pyrenees dogs who need homes everywhere. When I see pictures of their smiling faces, something happens in my heart. But honestly, I know nothing about the breed except how beautiful they are and how huge they are. But I need to know what I would be getting myself into if I adopted one. It's not enough that I love dogs, I really want to know about this breed. I figured this would be a good place to start my research! So anyone who has a pyr, please tell me what it's like, and give me the good, the bad, and the ugly, because I want to make an educated decision about whether one would fit into my home. (Next month I am moving into a HUGE house with a big fenced yard!!!)
Thank you!!
 ;D

On the shelter's website it said that dog adoptions are *usually* $65.00.

1694
I would be happy to pick them up and even foster them but I just don't have the money to get them out of jail right now!

1695
Wow they are cute! I've never seen or heard of a Boerboel! So I have never done a portrait of one!
When I have free time I like to do some "practice portraits" to expand my portfolio. I especially like doing breeds that aren't in my gallery. At some point I may hit you up for a pic of one of your cuties! I want at least one of EVERY BREED! (My lifetime goal!) I have a long way to go...people keep commissioning me to do Labradors!!!
