Newfoundland Discussions / Drake almost killed me....
« on: October 03, 2005, 11:01:23 pm »
There is nothing more dangerous than a big, black dog that likes to sleep on the floor of a pitch black hallway.  I got up to go to work this morning, went out of our bedroom into the hallway and before I knew it, I was on the floor.  Drake prefers to sleep on our hardwood floor, opposed to his nice soft dog bed in our bedroom.  He starts out on his dog bed when we go to bed, but usually he gets up and goes to lay in the hallway.  He decided to lay right next to the door last night and with the shorter days we are getting now, it's still dark when I get up.  So as I'm tripping over him this morning, he doesn't even move and barely lifts his head as I crash to the floor.  This isn't the first time he's done that, I think he's trying to kill me so it will just be him and Sarah.  Maybe I should change his name to Oedipus.....

Has anybody else almost been inadvertently killed by their dog?

I wouldn't say I'm opposed to getting a female, but so far I have only had males.  Females, dogs and cats, seem to be a bit more high maintenence.  Especially with cats, there is nothing more mellow than a big, fat neutered male.  SOooo CHIIiillll.... ..  Our boy kitties just chill in the back yard, munch on cat nip bushes all day and just live mellow kitty lives.  Female cats are sweet too, but just a bit more on edge and grouchy.  Drake, for a Newf, can be very hyper when it's play time but for the most part, is very laid back and easy going.  Sometimes to the point where he doesn't have the attention span to acknowledge people.  He's never snapped at anybody and licks the faces of babies.  Female dogs, from my experience, tend to be more needy, do the nose under the arm trick, and are, well, bitchy.  A neutered male Newf is just a big, fuzzy cuddle bug.  I don't know about other breeds, but it is pretty hard to get a female Newf puppy.  It seems like most people we have met, got their females after they had finished showing or breeding and they were full grown.  Like everything in life though, there are no absolutes.  It's more important to get a healthy dog from responsible breeders.

Glad to hear things worked out for Zoey and her first Kennel experience.  Drake's first experience was horrible and we still feel bad taking him to that kennel.  It was a cold, unloving place and Drake, SURPRISE! SURPRISE!  got Kennel Cough.  We swore we would never take him there ever again.  So, we did our homework and investigated all of the Kennels in the Bay Area.  We came across this place and it was amazing.  The owners are retired firefighters who came into some money and created this place out in the countryside.  It is a Doggy Country Club basically and it is only about $15 more a day than most kennels.  Drake has never gotten sick there and gets really excited when we drop him off.  It is a great experience for him and it gives us peace of mind that he is being so well taken care of.  Check out their site, it's worth seeing and I really encourage anybody who is planning to kennel their dog to do their homework way ahead of time.  There's probably a place like this near you!

TONS OF FUN!!!  You were lucky to be able to attend such a unique event.  Aside from the National Specialty, when else do you get that many Newfs together in one place?  Truly looks like a sweet pup!  The Newf I fell in love with though was Nemo the Gray Newf, what a cute little fuzzball!  I would love to get a Gray for our next Newf but they're pretty hard to come by.  Regardless, glad you had a good time.

Yeah, it's a pretty upsetting picture and that's why I didn't post the direct link to it, just not an appropriate thing to post in a forum like this.  I think people should see it though, but through their own searching.  I'm going to give Drake a big hug when I go home for lunch today. :'(   This world can be such a cruel place.....

I agree about The Sun, but did you see the picture?  Poor dog!  I refuse to believe that's a fake.  If the guy they caught was one of the sickos doing this, they should put a hook in his nose and one in is leg muscle and drag him behind a boat for the sharks to chew on.  Fair is fair, I have no tolerance for sadistic behaviour towards animals.  Once, I just about beat the crap out of a man I saw kicking his dog.

This story has surfaced up once again and now there is photographic evidence.  Dogs and kittens used as shark bait?  This needs to stop!  This is a graphic shot, but sometimes people need to see things to believe it actually happens.  I really hope the French government and the fishing industry as a whole stomp this kind of animal cruelty out!  I am so angry right now!  I don't want to post the link to the actual article, because kids might be reading this, but if any adults are interested in reading it, it's on today's Drudge report in the left column.  If you scroll down, it's about the 6th story.   More animal lovers need to know about this horrible, cruel practice.

I'll have to check that one out, I love coffee table books.  I'm creating my own right now but it may be a few years before it's finished.

These may seem pretty juvenile but my sister got these books for her kids.  They are pretty hilarious and animal centered.  Check out the other books they suggest too, good stuff.

WELCOME! I was just out in Columbus last weekend watching the Buckeyes kick the crud out of Iowa State.  Did my traditional visits to Bob Evans, Sliders and the Market over by Short North.  I must gain 5 pounds every time I visit family out there, all we do is EAT!!!  Gunner and Rudy are great looking dogs.

Just funny, light reading for the most part.  The books I put links to are sort of what I am talking about or any interesting books.  Nothing too heavy, I'm just not in the mood for that.  I just read the DaVinci Code and I need a break from that kind of stuff.  Keep it light and humorous if possible.  ;D

That message of Good Hope that Michael posted had an image from a book I had totally forgotten about.  I gotta get a copy of it.  I think there have been several books on this subject.  Does anybody else have some funny books, animal related or not, to share?  I'm really hating all the garbage on television these days and reading much more now, so I'd love to hear some of your favs.

That was awesome.  Put a smile on my face.  It reminded me of a book I saw and I'll have to look it up.  Thanks for sharing that, we all need more of that kind of stuff.

Food Discussion & Information / Re: Cooking your dogs food?
« on: September 30, 2005, 01:09:05 am »
I'm with Newf Lover on this one. We created a spoiled boy from the day we brought him home and he does get supplements plus kibble with meat added regularly. He's happy and healthy and adding the meat isn't time consuming at all. I guess your meal plan just needs to be something that fits into your schedule and needs to be something that you can do daily.

Thanks Jaime, I'm glad you understand.  People roll their eyes when they see us doctoring up Drake's kibble.  But all it usually is, is a chopped up slice of turkey lunchmeat and warm water.  No big deal!  Some people have mentioned that kibble is "nutritionally deficient", but that's not true.  We did our homework and found some of the healthiest dog food on the market.  It was also mentioned that a raw food diet could eliminate the need for supplements.  Another untruth.  My wife and I eat a diet of primarily raw fruits, vegetables, lean meat and grains.  Even with that diet, there is no way we could get all the necessary vitamins and minerals to keep our bodies in check with our active lifestyle.  We have to take supplements and so does our dog.  Raw food diets for pets are great, I've looked into it.  But it is expensive, can be hard to keep up with and actually gives Drake really loose stools.  To each his/her own and like so many things in life, there is no single/correct way.  All this talk about food!  The caffeine has worn off and now I'm starving!!!  Time for McDonalds-  I mean Fresh Choice.

I don't necessarily cook Drakes food but I put a little meat in warm water and stir it in to his kibble (Flint River Ranch).  We also add a dog multi-vitamin, Glucosemine and Fish Oil.  It was something we started when he was a pup and now, unless he's REALLY, REALLY hugry, he won't eat dry kibble.  It's no big deal to do and we feel it's only fair since we eat such flavorful food compared to him.  It doesn't add a lot of calories and he eats all of his food every time.  He is super healthy, his coat is beautiful and he has TONS of energy for a Newf.  You guys saw the video of him going after that soccer ball on the beach.....
