General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Checking IN
« on: September 20, 2016, 02:42:40 pm »
Hey Big Paw people!  It's been years since I was on here, almost forgot about this forum.  We lost our Newfie Drake about 5 years ago to Cancer.  Got another Newfie from another breeder in Gilroy.  Guinness was a sweet, slobbery dude, 215 lbs. at his biggest!  Unfortunately he died suddenly in February, only 4 years old....

These early deaths for Newfs have really taken it's toll on us.  We decided to go with another breed, so we got an English Golden Retriever a few months ago.  Not a Big Paw Dog but we love him very much.  Will poke my head in here once in a while.

Newfoundland Pictures / Re: Summer cut for Newfoundland
« on: May 19, 2008, 12:51:03 pm »
We have a couple of 9 month old Newfie pups and I was wondering about summer cuts for them. We live outside of Spokane WA with cold winters and hot summers. I've never seen a buzz cut on a Newf, but they are already uncomfortable with the heat. Our reputable groomer says she gives summer cuts all the time to St. Bernards, Newfies, etc. Our veterinarian says to only give them 1/2 cut or their fur will not grow back properly. Any comments on what's best for our babies is greatly appreciated. Thanks

You are smart to ask about this as there are many differing opinions on this subject.  Ever since Drake was a pup, we have been cutting his hair short.  We have done this year round and for several reasons.  First, it gets REALLY hot here in California during the summer so, obviously shorter hair will help him cool off.  Also, he's doing more outdoor activities during that time so it's easier to keep him clean.  Also, as most of us Newf owners know, they start to stink really badly after a while, no matter how clean they are, and it's especially bad when their fur is long.  We give Drake a puppy cut or summer cut about every 3-4 months and we, and most people who see him, think he looks great.  He just seems happier and more comfortable with a short coat.  I posted pics a while ago of what he looks like, check out these links:

The first link really shows how handsome they can be after a clip and the second one just shows the dramatic and much needed difference a clip will make during the summer.  As for it "ruining their coats", unless you're planning on showing your dogs, does that really matter?  I think your dog's comfort is more important than having a perfect coat.  Drake's coat looks great and everyone comments on how beautiful he is.  So that's my 2 cents, I hope you make an educated decision with your dogs best interests in mind.  Another tip, those little plastic kiddie pools are great for cooling off your pups during the summer, we have one filled and sitting out at all times for Drake during this time of the year.  He loves it!  Cute pups by the way!

I just wanted y'all to know that today was Drake's 6th birthday.  We can't believe we've had him in our life that long, he has been such a blessing.  I took him to the gym this morning as usual, and told everyone to give him extra love today as it was his special day.  I did feel bad because I had a really long day at work and didn't get home till late in the evening, so he didn't get a lot of love and attention today. So, I took him for a long late night walk, which he loves.  He thinks he's so tough, at attention, looking around for critters to chase, ears pricked up, so funny.  So think some special thoughts for him and send some love his way.  Here's some recent shots of the birthday boy with his new buddy, Paige.

Hey Big Paws Folks!  It's been a while and I've missed my fav big dog site! My 17 mo. daughter Paige has been keeping busy as well as work so I've had so little time as of late.  Drake is alive and well and his normal Newfie self.  We took him up to Lake Tahoe last weekend and had a blast.  He got to tango with a Black Bear the first night and was Mr. Ferocious!  He chased the bear up the fence and it glared at him as it walked along the top, hopped onto a tree and shimmied down into the neighbors back yard.  We were cracking up! I wish I had gotten a picture of that! The next day we went to the Village at Squaw Valley to do some shopping and have lunch.  We tied up Drake in the front where we could see him and a constant flow of people came up to pet him.  At one point I saw a big buffed guy looking at Drake and smiling.  Then I noticed there was an entourage with him and a cameraman, so I left the table to go see who it was.  It turned out to be Vernon Davis of the San Francisco 49ers and he was very interested in Drake but wasn't sure if he was friendly.  Once I introduced them and he realized Drake was a loverdog, we had some laughs and chatted for a while.  He was a really down to earth, nice guy and he even posed for a pic with me and Drake.  After our encounter, I think he has become a full fledged Newf Lover!  I hope he spreads the word about Drake!  ;D

We just ordered a harnass for Cirra from Wilczek Woodworks -purple, of course.  It has not arrived yet.  They are in NH and have some very nice carts.  At this time the waiting list is four to six months for a cart.  We don't know how Cirra will like carting so thought we would make something for her to try before even thinking about ordering a cart.  We are using the wheels from our Vermont Garden Cart, bent some aluminum for shafts and have made a wooden box from some wood that was around the house which we will need to paint.  Purple - per chance???  We will put it all together when we get the harnass. Cirra has not done any carting yet and it is my understanding that starting very slowly and getting your dog used to the equipment is the best way to approach carting.  Also here is a link to making a cart out of PVC.

Thanks for the info!  Drake had cart training back when he was just a youngun and he took to it like a pro.  I'll have to keep looking, we were hoping to have this all ready for Paige's first birthday next month but that probably won't happen.  :-\

Thanks. I think I have a built-in B.S. meter.

Thanks for checking that out, I was just passing along something my wife sent me, wasn't trying to post B.S.  I'm not sure why someone would keep a story like that going, unless they're trying to make Johnson & Johnson look bad.  I'll share this with my wife, she'll be relieved.  My bad for not checking things out before I posted this, it's hard when you have an emotional topic like healthy puppies being euthanized just for lack of proper homes.

My wife works for Johnson & Johnson and just recieved this email today, hopefully all of these dogs find homes!  So sad...

Newfoundland Pictures / Re: Drake & Paige in Yosemite

Thanks guys, yes Paige is becoming a little person now.  She does belly laughs and is a week or so away from crawling, I can't believe how fast she's grown.  Drake hasn't quite bonded with her yet, but once she starts to interact with him, i.e. dropping him food, that will change.  Yosemite is so amazing, you all have to go there.  That last picture of the three of us says it all, virgin nature, so beautiful and majestic, never to be ruined by human greed.  I love that place!

A fitting end for Ron Mexico!!!  Thanks for posting that video, I'll share it with others.  It makes my heart ache when I see all those pictures of those poor fighting dogs living in horrible conditions, just waiting to die.  The sick people who cause that suffering deserve the condamnation of the whole world, those poor, poor dogs....  :'(

Hey guys, hope all is well with everybody and their doggies.  I don't get much time to get on this site much these days with the baby and work keeping me so busy.  We were up in Yosemite about a month ago and it was a blast.  We stayed at the Tenaya Lodge in Yosemite where Sarah was having work meetings.  While she was in meetings, the three of us hiked the valley floor.  Well.... actually I was trying to maneuver a baby stroller with one hand and walk a 130 lb. Newf with the other, constantly dodging European and Japanese tourists who wanted to photograph Drake with his Doggles and saddlebags on and ask 1000 questions about him, stopping for numerous bottle feedings (for both the dog and baby), all while having a wonderful time in one of the most beautiful places on Earth.  It began to rain so we headed out, but I had to stop and get a pic of the three of us at the lookout point, which you see below.  What a shot!  You can barely see Half Dome in the distance.  Got several great pictures that day as you can see below.  Hope to have more adventures in Yosemite with Paige and Drake in the future, hopefully Sarah will join us too

Newfoundland Pictures / Happy 5th Birthday Drake!
« on: May 01, 2007, 10:31:51 am »
Hey all!  I just wanted to drop a note and let you know that Drake turned 5 years old today!  Yay Drake!  I can't believe it's been 5 years since he came into our lives.  He is such a great dog and we are truly blessed.  He will get a special dinner tonight and maybe a plain McDonalds hamburger on our walk too, if I finish with work early enough.  Attached are some pictures I took of him about 5 minutes ago.  He looks sad because I made him stop playing "fetch the soccer ball" and pose for some pics.  Also are a few of him and Paige, they are becoming good buds.  Exciting times!  He actually went and laid down in Paige's nursery the other day as if to let us know he's trying.  Good Boy!  Please send some good thoughts and Happy Birthday wishes out there for Drake today!

Hey guys, it's been a while since I posted last, my 4 mo. old daughter Paige has been taking up most of my free time.  I wanted to share some new pics I took of her and Drake.  He is still not 100% in love with her yet, but that will come.  She loves to pull his hair and give him treats that we put in her hand, I'll have to videotape that for a Youtube broadcast, it's HILARIOUS!

Anything Non-Dog Related / Baby Paige is Here!
« on: December 02, 2006, 12:51:51 pm »
Hey All!  It's been a while since I visited last, so much to do!  Paige was born on Nov. 22nd, a bit early too.  She was Breech and we had scheduled a C-section for Dec. 5th.  But on a routine doctors visit on Nov. 22nd, we found out that Sarah's amniotic fluid was dangerously low, so our OB GYN said, "She's at 37.5 weeks, so let's get that baby out now before the holiday weekend starts!"  So we had Paige at 5:42 PM Pacific time.  The next day was a Thanksgiving to be truly thankful for.  We are now adjusting to Parental life and it is hard but great.  As you can see by the picture, Drake is moping around a bit because he sees that he's not the only child in the house any more.  But he and Paige will become great friends.  We are excited to do a lot of things with those two, I can't wait to build a cart so Drake can pull Paige around.  Any tips from you Cart pulling Newfie folks would be appreciated.  Here are some pics below of Paige and Drake and of course there will be some Youtube videos to come soon as well.  Enjoy!
