General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Re: Strangers by my fence
« on: April 20, 2006, 01:27:15 am »
Maybe ask them yourself about what they are doing there.

I know when I was younger, I used to "stalk" the neighbours horses because I knew I could never have one of my own.  Maybe they just really like your dogs and wish they could get to know them better?  (but sometimes I'm pretty niave so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about ;))

EllieandBlu, I believe it was your report here on BPO about that training seminar where I heard it.  I remembered some of the horrid things that a dog might do to defend himself from this method and that is what freaked me out about the kids standing there. :o

Some people are so stupid! >:(

Yah, I had my own encounter with the "Big = Aggressive" mentality last night.  Some people are so dumb!

I picked a Saint because they are notoriously NON- aggressive and good with kids.

I was out walking Teddy and my kids (5&6) last night and happened to stop at one of Eve's grade 1 friends houses because they were outside playing.  We were talking to the Dad who was BBQing.

He said "here, let me see the lead" and so (me being the trusting person I am) I handed it over without a second thought.  He proceeded to run the lead from the collar and then around Teddy's waist and jerk him up into the air with it a few times! :o  He says "this is what you do to aggressive dogs!"

Hello!!!!  Teddy is 14 weeks (he's still a baby!!) and is anything but aggressive!!!  He was excited and wiggly but was not jumping or barking.  There was not a trace of aggressive in anything he did.

I just grabbed the leash and told him that since Teddy was a baby, and was not showing any aggression, that he did not need to be handled like that.

I don't know where people get off laying hands on my dog!!

I understand the concept of wrapping the leash around the waist (something about it being the second attack point since you already have the throat) and have read that some dogs will react badly to this.  Its one things to do something, but I think someone should understand WHY it works (or doesn't) and should NOT do it to someone else's dog - especially when there are 3 little kids standing around!!!!

I'm really aggitated about this.  Can you tell??

I don't think he looks bad at all!

I think that sometimes people get "skinny" confused with "fit".  I think he looks fit - I don't see ribs or protruding hip bones!  He's also probably at that 'teenage' stage where he can eat and eat and never gain weight (like teen human boys do).

Maybe for your own peice of mind, you might like to see him gain a bit, but I do not think (from the pictures at least) that there is any threat to his health at this point.

(And I think your neighbour deserved that cup of coffee!!! >:()

I can almost tell you now, that I'm going to have the same kind of trouble with Teddy.

Yes, I inadvertantly taught Teddy how to paw.  He pawed at me one day and I praised him because I thought "How cute, teach him to shake-a-paw!".  Now he paws all the time!  This is not going to be fun once summer comes and we are all wearing shorts.  He also does it to my kids too (5&6) which isn't so nice either. :-[
