I can't agree more.  It irks me when people speak out of ignorance against a breed.  Preferablly against pit bulls  (I'm so sick of hearing that age old debate).  I dont own one nor have I ever, but that doesnt mean I will speak out of foolishiness b/c of some dumb stereo type.   Not every dog is bad b/c of size shape or color.  I have the same problem with people who open their month & assume my pet is aggressive b/c they see a curled tail & think Oh-My an Akita ( and lions & tigers, & bears!).. If those type of people had half a brain they would  research or do their homework before speaking.  Whew I feel better! ;-)

I moved to Seattle almost 4 years ago, & coming from a semi-small town everything here was so intimidating & as large as Seattle was I felt so lonely.  Being raised around dogs & being an Akita lover I seized the first oppertunity I had after we moved into a dog friendly apt.  Im not hip or terribly big on buying directly from a breeder or a pet store,  when so many out there need homes.  So I hit the local shelter & low and below there lays Gizmo (Akita/Husky.)  He looked so sad,  he just layed there on the cement floor not interested in the swirl of activity around him, the minute I knew I had to have him was when his eyes lite up & sparkled when I squeezed the squeaky toy.   It's an unreal feeling of emotion that flowed thru me as cheesey as it sounds, that was a moment I wont forget.  Ever since the day we walked out of the shelter we've been best buddies. LOL ok get  your kleenex thats our story ;-)

Your research has proved you right, however its often the dog who proves us somewhat wrong at times.   Gizmo is Akita...& he's fiercely protective of family...altho its more often then not he's more friendly to strangers then Akita traits would lead you to believe.  However, I think dogs reguardless of breed, have great instincts w/ people.  Rather someone is bad news or what not.    My Akita...he's a lover of other dogs, hardly aggressive unless severally corner by two or more aggressive dogs...& as for kids surprisingly he's a lover of them as well. 

I guess I lucked out huh.. too bad he's as stubborn as I am!
