My husband and I both brought two dogs each into our marriage.  My two dogs, Rocco and Maia, and one of his dogs, Baxter are great together.  They are fine with our routine of am eat, outside to go potty, into cages for the day, outside to play for an hour at lunch, eat dinner then outside when I get home from work until they get tired and want to come in (usually 30 minutes to an hour), then they hang out in the kitchen until our son goes to bed.

His older dog, Cody isn't doing well with my dogs, doesn't like being in his cage but destroys things if left out, barks constantly when outside, whines when he is in the kitchen, and just can't seem to settle down when we are all hanging out at night.  We let the dogs hang out one at a time with all of us before Kole goes to bed but they are all big so we can't have all four out with us.

Drew is getting really upset with having to yell atbthe dogs when Cody growls and starts things, let Cody in while everyone else plays outside, listening to him whine in the kitchen while we are getting Kole ready for bed, then having to deal with him stirring everyone else up in the evenings.  Plus, he whines and barks on and off throughout the night in his cage.  I won't let him sleep with us because he spooks easily at night and I get up a few times to use the restroom or check on Kole.

So, this week Drew has started talking about finding him a new home.  I don't think we should because he committed to raising him for life when he got him and I made that committment when we got married.  Cody is safe, warm, and well fed but not happy.  I want Drew to spend more time with him alone but he is not willing. (Cody doesn't love me, he won't let me pet him, only feed him and let him in and out).  He bit my hand once when I reached for him but it didn't leave a mark and as soon as he made contact he knew what he did and licked me.

What do you guys think we should do?  I am willing to keep him and put up with him.  But is it fair to him.

Old English Mastiff Discussions / Loss of Bladder Control
« on: December 09, 2008, 09:18:16 am »
Maia is 4 and half now.  She was spayed at 1 year old.  She has been diagnosed with hormonal incontinence and is now on medicine twice a day for the rest of her life.  Do other mastiff owners have this issue or have you heard it is common with mastiffs.

She doesn't even realize that she has left a nice big wet spot on the floor or in her cage.  But with one little human baby and one on the way we noticed quickly.  The medicine quickly resolved her issues as long as she gets it religiously twice a day.

I'm back.  I was on Big Paws Only a lot a year or so ago but then got busy with work and life.  I'm back now and I have two more dogs added to our clan.  My loving husband entered the picture this year and brought two more crazy dogs with him.  We are all doing well and all four dogs get along great and drive me batty with all their barking.

Anything Non-Dog Related / Been MIA...but I got news
« on: August 13, 2007, 06:09:22 pm »
I have been MIA for a while due to a large work schedule but I have some time on my hands now.  Nikolas 'Kole' James was born on Friday so now we are just hanging out at home for a few weeks.  Rocco is having some trouble not getting in Kole's face every chance he gets, therefore, Rocco gets in trouble a lot.  Maia just does drive by checking to see what he is and why he is so loud sometimes.  My Dad and Sister are here helping us out which makes Rocco and Maia both very happy since as you know anyone who enters this house has come to see them and only them.

Just a funny story I thought I would share with you guys.

I am driving home from Target yesterday with my cousin who is my age.  We had been looking at baby stuff and everything else at Target (it being our favorite store and all).  She turns to me and says "Why can't you just get another big, drooly, hairy dog instead of having a baby?  You could even get another boy who is stupid like Rocco."

Well, all I could do was laugh.  The baby wasn't planned per say and I really would have loved to get a another big, drooly, hairy puppy but it's just not going to happen.

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / No Dogs on the Bed

Since I will be having a baby in August.  I initially thought I better start getting the dogs to stay off the bed now.  Well that lasted about a week as you can below.  I guess the baby will just have to stay off the bed.

Rocco and his dog that he sucks on
Maia being pathetic
Rocco ignoring me.

I saw these guys on Petfinder, they are Newf/Lab mixes and look just like Rocco did as a puppy.  I would love to have one but I know with my work schedule it wouldn't be fair and it would probably just cause more stress but they look so much like Rocco did as a pup.  The top three are two of the boys, the bottom two pics are Rocco as a pup.

Rocco is a sucker as you can see below.  He has four stuffed animals spread throughout the house, two bears and two dogs.

On Friday, Rocco, Maia, and the two dogs I am fostering Roscoe and Nellie were outside playing.  I should have monitored the situation better but instead I was sitting on the patio chatting on my phone.

A little background on the situation.  Nellie barks and lunges at Rocco and Maia all the time, R and M just ignore her and go about their business.  Roscoe (foster)raises his leg and peed near or on Rocco a few times since he came on Thursday night.  Rocco would just walk away.

Well, everyone was playing nicely when all of the sudden the barking and lunging turned into nasty growling.  I yelled at them, everyone backed away and then started chasing around the yard playfully.  A couple minutes later when the dogs all came to get water, I see blood dripping down the Roscoe's (foster) neck.  I checked him out and he had a penny size gash that went through all the layers of skin.  It didn't seem to bother him so I cleaned him up, called the vet, and was getting ready to go.  At that point I wasn't sure who got him until I see Roscoe's fur stuck in Rocco's teeth.

The vet did make me feel better by saying that it was probably just accidental by the fact that they all broke it up so easily and that foster dog doesn't have any more damage.  The vet thought that maybe the playing just got rough and Rocco got his tooth caught in foster dog's collar since the injury is right under where is collar is.

My big innocent, loves everyone boy had bitten into another dog hard enough to do damage.  Now I have to say "yes' when asked if he has ever bitten.  Roscoe steered clear of Rocco while Nellie took to attacking Rocco which gave me a couple near heart attacks when Rocco started to fight back.

I traded Nellie with another foster home for an 8 year old beagle mix male who is so slow and laid back that Maia gave up trying to make him play.  She just couldn't handle the fact that he wouldn't run so she could chase him.

The house is settled into a routine once again.

This watercolor was done by the same lady who sketched my dogs.  This is of my Mom who died in 2003 after a 6 year battle with breast cancer.

I haven't been fostering for a while since I got a new job where I am gone 12 - 14 hours a day.  But one of the foster homes went out of town for the weekend so I have watching Caramel (1 yr old lab, shepX and Gus 1 yr old Bassett).

Maia and Rocco love them both, Maia especially loves Gus.
