Hachiko: A Dog's Story -- Trailer to the movie--
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaS37E3gKOU

I cant wait to see Hachiko: A Dog's Story, but with that said there comes a down fall...this could be the worst thing to ever happen to the Akita breed.  Because every kid and or person that see's this is going to want an Akita. Although beloved by many as a family pet (as myself), Akitas are recommended for dedicated and experienced dog owners. The Akita breed is NOT for everyone!!!

I just don't want a bunch of idiots going out and buying a akita for breeding and other negative purpose's we dont need ANY more Akitas in rescue groups or animal shelters. My Akita resuce friends have so much on their plate already with the Akitas that need homes this movie will probably triple their orphans.

Also you have people just thinking this movie is so sweet and heart warming, so they go out and get an Akita and they don't know how to train nor take care of this breed. The Akita ends up attacking people, kids, other dogs, and other animals and have to be put down. That just makes my breed sound even more dangerous.  This movie will make so many BYB jump on this movie as well  like they did with the 101 Dalmatians movie and so many other dog movies. Akitas are a dog most wanted by the people least able to handle them.

Already Hachiko getting early buzz -- From a tv site --

"Certainly dogs are big this fall with Disney's hit comedy, "Beverly Hills Chihuahua," the Nov. 21 animated entry "Bolt," and "Marley," which is Fox's Christmas entry. But none may be better than the independently made "Hachiko: A Dog's Story," a film that screened at the Crest Westwood on Sunday morning for foreign buyers attending the American Film Market. There wasn't a dry eye in the house for this beautiful and touching American remake of a Japanese film (based on an incredible true story) that stars Richard Gere and Joan Allen. It is perhaps director Lasse Hallstrom's best film since "My Life As A Dog" and "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?" (and yes, that includes his two best picture nominees,"The Cider House Rules" and "Chocolat"). A smart American distributor should start thinking about the 2009 Oscar race and snatch up this potential contender immediately."

Its a lovely tribute to my breed and I am proud to see it but I also see the other side of it and know this will impact my breed greatly. I am just OVERLY worried that the popularity will explode in the wrong direction.

Some what good news from my Akita friends at the ACA- http://www.akitaclub.org/ along with the owners of akitas who acted in the movie were able to get a short disclaimer about the breed into the credits of the movie...I doubt that will be enough though.  My akita friends are doing their BEST to get the word out and trying to contact the major film company to see if they can do anything to get the word out. They are certainly going to try...but this is the film industry we are talking about, They are in the business of entertaining not educating.

I hate to be cynical, but I'm afraid that people will see a movie, fall in love with the Akita breed, and do something stupid. The popularity of pet shops, sites like PuppyFind, and backyard breeders would support the fact that by and large, we're a disposable, instant-gratification society. I have talked with some members of the board of ACA and they say we (including myself) will try and hand out flyers at some movie theaters when this movie comes out. I know it may seem like a long shot and in hopes to educate the public but to be honest -- people will take what they want from this movie no matter what all we do -- sadly the buying public today want what they want when they want it no matter what is explained to them. I do hope it gets to some people and the word is spread out. The only good thing I can say about this movie (besides actually hoping to see a honest realistic portrayal of my breed, which I think they have done) is that the economy is now so bad, hopefully no one will have the money to go buy an expensive Akita puppy!!! I and my Akita friends can only hope people won't want to feed a dog this size, vet a dog this size and train a dog this size in today's economy.

Wish we could control the backyard breeders and horrible puppymills but we all know that ain't the way it is....

Please pass this along to ALL other forums you are a memeber of and e-mail this to every person you know so the word can be spread around.

Ok, sorry such a long rant. But i really want to get the word out and I know it always helps to post on forums like these. So please for the sake of my beloved breed pass this along to anyone you can friends, family, co-workers, other forums and all just pass this along. Thank You so much from me, Akita Club of America, Fellow akita owners and last but NOT least all the Akita rescue groups all over the world.

I hope you all go and see it when it comes out, Its going to be one amazing movie. The trailer to the movie alone brings tears to my eyes. Its such a heart warming film, I am dying to see it.

Well i have hardwood floors in the living room and soon or later will be getting hardwood floors in all the bedrooms as well. I have tile floors in the kitchen and foyer but the poor hardwood floors are getting scratches all over them from my big paw dogs and the floors are not looking to pretty anymore. So i am looking for something to save my hardwood floors. I have been doing some research and i came across these Soft Claws Nail Caps for Dogs. And was wondering do you think they will work? Have any of you used these? Also does anyone know what will get scratches off wood floors? Cant i rent a wood floor buffer? Will that help?

Here is what the Nail Caps look like and some info on the product as well:::

Akita Discussions / Birthday Fun
« on: January 21, 2009, 07:18:46 pm »
Ok so im sorry that i did not get these pictures on here earlier. lol! Porschas Birthday was January 14th and she had a great birthday, she got presents and a cake (My first ever doggie cake i made) it turned out great it looked so real it was crazy!! And of course Porscha and Mercedes just LOVED the cake. It was a 2 layer cake and it was fun to make. Porscha got to go to Petsmart too and meet some doggie friends.

Well since i did not post here on Porschas birthday here is a little happy birthday and tribute to my sweet girl.

*I cant really put into words how much i love Porscha. I'm really the luckiest person in the world to own such a beautiful and amazing Akita, people always say that dogs have changed their life and without them, they wouldnt be here. Well thats true for me. She has made my life such a joy.
Happy Birthday to my sweet and beautiful Porscha.

I am still hard at work trying to finish Porschas 1 year old video. Its going to be a wodnerful video and a tribute to Porscha and her first year. Its hard to cram 1 year of pictures into a 10 min. slideshow/Video (Youtube only allows videos that are not longer than 10 Mins!) So i am cramming puppy pictures and very picture i can find into the video. Oh how hard it is to cram 1 year old life into a 10 min. video. lol! But i am almost done, i am hoping to be done with it by the 1st of Febuary keep your paws and fingers crossed. lol!

Ok anyways here are some Pictures from Porschas 1st Birthday Party:::::

Get your tissues ready before reading.  :'(
http://www.fosters.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090108/GJNEWS_01/701089747/0/FRONTPAGE

http://www.wmur.com/news/18440790/detail.html

But i am happy to report that she is now in the very good hands of my friends at ARWNY.

Here is "Wish" at ARWNY more pictures of her and more info –
http://www.akitarescuewny.com/welcome.htm

I talked to one of my friends from ARWNY tonight and she said that "Wish"- the Akitas name, so far, she can only be fed by hand tiny amounts, her stomach can't hold much. She is getting fluids -- the more info I get, I'll let you all know. A Vet Tech/Wonderful breeder/volunteer of ARWNY's is going to foster her at her vet's office for ARWNY to get her strong and safe!! So me and ARWNY have high hopes that "Wish" will get her wish -- to live a healthy normal life with a happy ending. :)

This so sad and so Shameful that a person could do that to a poor animal. I couldnt look at her picture, it was bringing tears to my eyes. Its so very sad that we have to know that we have such heartless people in this world. So very sad. My heart just breaks not just because its a dog but its my breed that i adore so much.... :'( :'( :'(

*But i am glad that she is now in the very good hands. :)

*My thoughts and prayers go out to this sweet girl, I am hoping she recovers with flying colors. I will keep everyone updated. :)

Food Discussion & Information / *Question* Protein content of a food
« on: January 07, 2009, 07:13:52 am »
I was talking to a few of my friends and we were having disagreements on Protein in dogs food. So maybe some one can help me explain it to them.My questions are:::

*Is their such thing as to much protein?
Like with EVO its 42% Protein
Wellness Core its 34% Protein
Taste of the Wild 'Wetlands formula' its 32% Protein - I feed this

*Is it bad to feed high Protein foods?

*Isnt the Higher the Protein the better?

*What about the named meat "meal" is it good? Does it mean the meat was dry so it stays at the top of the list?

*What would rate Taste of the Wild Wetlands Formula?

*Is taste of the wild dog food pretty good?

http://www.tasteofthewildpetfood.com/products/dogs/wetlands_canine_formula/

Thanks for all the Help! :)

Best Breed What breed is the Best?

Dog owners talking:::::

"But why", said I, "is your dog best?"

The Poodle owner smiled, "You've heard it said, they do not shed, so they're better than the rest.

"The Border Collie owner, shook his head to disagree, "Intelligence is the best of traits, and my dog is smart as he can be!

"The Afghan owner soon chimed in, and said so haughtily, "The regal carriage of my breed makes it best for all to see.

"The Dobermans owner laughed, "You're way off track" said he, "My dog can guard my home and hearth and always protects me.

"The Cairn Terriers owner, talked about it's loyalty. She then shared a touching story about the Cairn, "Grey Friar's Bobby."

"The Golden's owner next stepped up, saying "A loving dog's for me." "This breed is best, for it gives it's love, so unconditionall y!"

Jack Russell Owner Said..."My dog's a ball of fire, Jack Russell's bound with energy." "That's why this breed is the best at sports and excels in agility!"

German Shepherd Owner comes in and says..."When it comes to taking orders, you all surely agree, That my Shepherd at obedience trials, always does the job for me!"

Alaskan Malamute owner then comes over and says....."My Malamute can pull a sleigh" said his owner with a grin. "In carting competitions we are guaranteed to win."

"So, what makes your dog special?"

Soon all eyes turned to me, They're right, thought I, their dogs are great, I couldn't disagree. I felt, there isn't just one trait, that can describe my breed. It does shed LOTS, and is Collie smart indeed. It's loving, loyal, and elegant, when it walks here by my side. Is Intelligent Indeed, can guard and protect, Does great in obedience, agility, and I can look on that with pride. If a stranger ever threatened, it would be the last time that he tried, My dog I thought, can do it all, and I looked at her and smiled. There were so many other things, I could have told them all. Instead I smiled politely, and gave my girl a pat, They may not understand, I thought, that a dog can do all of that.

"It's hard to put in words," I said, "I don't know where to start." "An Akita" simply put, "Its the breed that owns my heart." :)

Food Discussion & Information / Info about Dog Food...............
« on: November 03, 2008, 02:01:53 pm »
Hello Everyone!
First let me say thanks to all the people who answered my last question about some other dog food brand. Well i have another question about the dog food called "Diamond Naturals
Chicken & Rice Adult Dog Formula" i know that some people dont like this food brand.....but i know they have just changed their Chicken & Rice Formula to be better than the last.

Here are the NEW Ingredients::::

Chicken, chicken meal, whole grain brown rice, white rice, cracked pearled barley, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), oatmeal, beet pulp, egg product, flaxseed, natural chicken flavor, fish meal, potassium chloride, choline chloride, vitamin E supplement, iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, thiamine mononitrate, manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, ascorbic acid, vitamin A supplement, biotin, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, sodium selenite, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, riboflavin, vitamin D supplement, folic acid.

And here is the Guaranteed Analysis:::

Crude Protein 26.0% Minimum
Crude Fat 16.0% Minimum
Crude Fiber 3.0% Maximum
Moisture 10.0% Maximum
Zinc 150 mg/kg Minimum
Selenium 0.4 mg/kg Minimum
Vitamin E 150 IU/kg Minimum
Omega-6 Fatty Acids * 2.5% Minimum
Omega-3 Fatty Acids * 0.4% Minimum

So my question is>>> Is it much better than their last Ingredients? I and some of my friends are thinking about switching to this dog food......

Thanks so much!! :)
