That has to be one of the cutest Brown Newf puppies I have ever seen.  There's no ignoring a Newf Pup.

Thanks for fixing things, I was able to put images up with no problem.

If any of you didn't see this in my other pics, this was a beautiful Gray Newf that I had the unique opportunity to run into in at the Specialty.  She was very sweet and her handler was more than accomodating for a photo shoot.  It's amazing how snotty some of those people were, total a-holes!  Any way, these rare Newfs are fun to see when you can.  I guess this solves my own mystery.

On a side note, after the big Specialty weekend, last Sunday was Drake's 3rd Birthday.  I can't believe it's been three years already.  We love him so much and he has enriched our lives more than we can ever understand.  Here he was on the big day, sitting in his kiddie pool with his Dauchsund Uncle Tucker.  HAPPY DOGGIES!!!

Newfoundland Pictures / Monterey Specialty Weekend
« on: May 04, 2005, 12:48:19 pm »
We had a great time in Monterey last weekend at the Specialty and I just had to share some pictures.  The first picture was the first night, Drake, Bear and Yogi played around on the 19th green at the Hyatt golf course.  Next are the last day of the Specialty, the Best of Show contest.  There's a handler with her Newf, a Sweet Newf named Shelton getting groomed and a Beautiful Rare Gray Newf.  I was excited to get that one!  Finally, there is the beach shots which were great.  It was so awesome to see all these big dogs playing together in the surf and just being dogs.  The whole weekend was a great experience and it was fun making new friends with Michael, Jamie and Bear.

I encountered the same problem last night and I have reduced all of my shots to 72 DPI and they were all below 600 KB.  I think because there are so many people on the site now, the upload tray gets filled very quickly and then the problems begin.  Hmmmmm........ ...

Jen, you are right, there was a Grey Newf at the Specialty and I got a picture of her.  I will post my all my pics from last weekend tonight when I get home.  They are a genetic freak of sorts, not the best or healthiest dog to own, big risk of a sad, sad ending.  Like most dogs, when you start getting into sub-breeds, things can get messy.  Even Browns and Landseers are more at risk for hip, heart and skin problems, but it's not a guarantee.  I have seen many health problem-free dogs of both types.

Sara, (that's my wife's name except with an "h") the drooling is just something that comes with Newfies and Saints.  There no getting around it, but some dogs definitely drool more than others.  Our breeder tries to breed lower volume droolers, but that is pretty hard to eliminate completely.  I believe a lot of it has to do with the length of their lips.  Drake has a longer nose and shorter lips than the average Newf and he really only drools when he is begging for food and after he has been playing or gets excited.  Some breeders don't like this look, preferring the short nose and long lips, but others don't care.  It's all a roll of the genetic dice, one isn't necessarily better than the other.  You'll see what I mean about his lips in this picture Jaime posted from this weekend, you can see the difference between him and Bear.

Regardless, they are all beautiful, sweet dogs whether they drool a lot or not. You'll just have to get in the habit of carrying a rag with you, we bought bibs at the Newf show last weekend which are pretty cute and work well too.  Like I said before, if you have a problem with hair or drool, Newfies are the wrong dog for you.  Look forward to seeing pics of your pup.

I am thinking about making a T-shirt that has all the answers to the repetitive questions that people ask about my Newf.  He is a Newfoundland, he's 3 years old, he weighs 130 lbs., he eats 4 cups of kibble a day, yes his poops are big, yes I have to brush him a lot, yes he drools a lot,  no he's not a bear, yes he walks me, yes he lives a shorter lifespan than the average dog and thank you for reminding me of that upsetting fact, etc, etc.  Actually, people mean well by their questions and it is fun to have a dog that people get excited and inquisitive about.  I am always happy to answer people's questions and see them smile at the big, drooling beast I have on a leash.  Little kids get so excited when they see Drake.

We use Advantage on Drake for fleas.  We have used it on our cats for years as well and although all cats seem to have brain damage at times, espcially when they have too much catnip, they are very healthy.  Advantage is a topical medication and is absorbed into your pets bodyfat.  It doesn't go into their bloodstream.  If all else fails, talk to your Vet.

Ditto what Jaime said, our Newf Drake is truly a gift from Nature.  Newfies are so smart, so sweet, so gentle, and SO FLIPPING CUTE!!!!!!!!!!  For more info on the breed, go to:

http://www.ncnc.org/NewfWorld/newfworld.htm

I don't know much about St. Bernards, but I am sure they are very similar.  They have Newfie genetics because they were overbred in the early 1900's and Newfies were introduced to restrengthen their gene pool, so there will be similarities.  And as for cost, you are probably talking about a few hundred dollars and if you are up to that point, is it that big of a deal to spend a few hundred more if it is a dog you want?  Do your homework on breeders, expensive dogs don't necessarily mean quality dogs.  There's also rescue societies where you can get a quality dog for practically nothing.  More more info on this, go to:

http://www.ncnc.org/Rescue/rescue.htm

Good luck on your decision!  You will be happy either way.

We are off to beautiful Monterey for the National Specialty.  We are so excited!!!  This is going to be a blast, hundreds of Newfs all over the place, my logo on all the official items and great sunny weather.  We are bringing our Drake and our friend is bringing her Newf Yogi and my Mom is bringing her Dachsund Tucker.  He may feel a bit intimidated by all the big dogs but he's a trooper.  Hope to possibly run into some of you, I look forward to meeting Michael, Jaime and Bear.  I'll have some great photos to share on Monday.

Newflvr was right, they are called Grays.  This site below gave me the most straightforwar d description of the dogs and a bit of background info on Newfies as well.  It's always nice to get more info on them.

I still haven't been able to find a definitive picture of a Gray online though.  I would be cool to see one!!!

Yeah, I have heard them called Greys too.  It would be interesting to see one next to a Black.  So it might be a skin issue?  Interesting... ....   Probably a side product of a Newfie Mix as well.

I've obviously seen a lot of Black Newfs, quite a few Landseers and plenty of Browns, but does anyone here have a Silver Newf or even know of any?  I haven't seen any at the dog shows I have been to and I haven't even seen a picture of one, but I know they exist.  I recently did a logo for the NCNC Health & Rescue:

http://www.ncnc.org/Rescue/rescue.htm

They wanted me to put all the varieties of Newfs in it and I had to just guess what the silver looked like.  I guessing it isn't as light colored as I made it, that was because I didn't want it to blend with the Black.  They probably are just a bit lighter than a Black.  Can anyone enlighten me?  Pics would be great too!!!!!!!!!
