I just talked to Tim, he just got off the highway near Mt.Gilead, only about 1/2 to go. He made really great time or he let earlier than I thought. I was already at work.

He said he might stop for breakfast and I told him I would kill him if he did!!!!!!!!

Doesn't he know we are ALL waiting to hear from him???

Food is overated at a time like this!!

I live equal distance between Dayton and Cincinnati (southern Ohio) The rescue where Ellie is at is north of Columbus so Tim is on a 2 hour drive right now. He doesn't mind and likes the road trip.

I am actually going to Columbus tomorrow we are going to the Arnold (Swarzanager??) athletic competitions.  We are stopping in Shaker Heights (Cleveland) to drop my son at a friends house and then off to Columbus.

Since you can't get any work done today you can just keep up with BPO!!  We will all be waiting to see your posts through out  the day.

I think it is a great idea to have hubby decide!!  Takes the pressure off of you and when puppy does anything wrong you can remind him that it was his choice (just kidding!!)

DH picked our springer and they were soooo close she is gone now but we jokingly call her St. Stoli because he only remembers the good.

I picked Harley and he just thinks he is such a dork!!
We are also considering a second dog but I Know he has to be the one to pick it - it will probably be a rescue, probably a mixed breed.

I have to say if I were to go look at Ellie she would be in my car on the way home (actually we are coming to Ohio this weekend so she may be anyway where exactly do you live???)

I know if and when I bring a dog home Harley will have to meet it but that said I would adopt from Paige's rescue in a heartbeat, no question!!!  She offered to pull a dog for me a couple of years ago and even though I didn't do it I am eternally grateful and know how much she loves and cares for animals!!

Best of luck and if  you get Ellie have her waiting outside for me on sunday as I drive back to Rochester.

Wow!!  What a beautiful family (skin and fur).

The pictures are awesome I too am amazed that you can get a photo like that - I only have Harley and taking a picture is an aerobic activity usually involving his back end only!!

Keep the beautiful pictures coming!!

OMGoodness what a sweetie!!  It is heartbreaking the life he has had, even the person that owns him now - just letting him wander all over - Of course, I think you should try to take him in and see how it works - but only you know if it is feasible (will your other dogs accept him and of course the financial end).  But if you could take him, clean him up, and find a great home that would be Awesome!!

Best of luck - he is a doll!!

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Re: I can't take the whining!!

Thanks everyone for your advise.

Harley is 7 years old and I can't say we are the best on exercising him - but that is nothing new.  He honestly starts whining the second I put my foot on the floor (he sleeps downstairs We sleep upstairs).  I come down let him out, give him breakfast, he eats, goes back out and does his thing, comes hangs on the couch with me while I watch the news and weather.  Today he was sitting with his head in my lap whining!!!  What could be wrong??

I do know that he is sensitive he was tentative when I came home - I think he was wondering if I was still mad at him.

Darling son took him for a walk (part of the punishment for the car accident) and now he is outside whining to come in.

Honestly, I felt SO bad for being angry but it was just to much and put me over the edge, aren't dogs supposed to be able to read our moods and LOWER our blood pressure - I think Harley forgot to read the memo!!

Thanks again, any and all suggestions will be mulled over!!

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / I can't take the whining!!
« on: February 10, 2009, 03:52:23 am »
Good morning everyone!!

I have written about Harley's whining before but it is getting worse - I didn't think it was possible!!  He whines when I'm not home (my son and husband want to kill him!) he won't play, they can't distract him he just sits by the window or door and whines.

Well now he whines all the time non-stop for no reason, he is fed, has fresh water, just came in from being outside, etc.  he whines morning, noon and night.  I LOVE Harley but I lost it this morning - I was trying to get ready for work, feeling stressed (computer issues), and he just would not be quiet.  I have tried ignoring him - he does not stop!!  I have tried distracting him but honestly, I can't be distracting him every minute.  I feel badly but when I left I was so Pis$*ed that I wanted to rip his vocal cords out!!  I have tried squirting him with a water bottle but then again I have to be in the room with him.  He also starts back whining about 20 seconds later.  I have never heard anything like this - I am to the point where I don't even want another dog because I'm afraid Harley will teach him/her to whine also!!  The place I board him calls him Honda (not Harley) because a Harley doesn't whine!!

I am sitting at work still trying to get my blood pressure down!!   By the way there is no medical reason for the whining we were at the vet about 2 weeks ago.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

I'm so glad that you have decided to give Boudreaux another chance.  I certainly hope with vigilance and training that this was an isolated incident and that your son and dog get to grow up together!!

So here is my warm and fuzzy story (I hope your goes just as well).  Stoli our springer spaniel was not raised with children and when she was about 4 I had my son.  They were raised together;  Stoli was a little jealous but unbelievably protective.  One day Stoli was sleeping under my sons bunk beds when my son went under and tried to pull her out - she gave a warning bite that caught him on the cheek - it was minor but traumatic my husband was trying to put the dog in the car to the humane association while I was holding the dog tight with both arms around her so he couldn't take her away.  It took awhile but the trust was regained (after more obedience work).  Stoli never bite again - even after a second child.  We watched her very carefully when additional children were around.

Strangely, my son did get bit by another dog - also a springer spaniel; at a playdate - even the other people said my son did nothing wrong he was walking to the bathroom when the dog sprung up and attached herself to his wrist!!

Anyway, I digress - I wish you all the luck in the world in your retraining of your beautiful pup.

Softhug:

I'm so sorry that you have to rehome Boudreaux.  I remember how excited you were to go pick him up.  He certainly is a handsome dog but everyone has to make the best decisions for the dog and the family.

*** appears to be a good breeder and should be able to place Bourdreaux in an appropriate home.

Thanks everyone for your laughter and support.

Insurance is coming tuesday to look at the car.  I will be waiting to see how much my insurance goes up from this.  The little darling didn't whine yesterday about taking Harley for a walk/jog...I think both Harley and darling son will be in better shape in the coming months.

I told hubby this is the perfect opportunity to get a really big dog since hubby is no longer in charge of picking up poop!!  Hubby didn't go for it since darling son will be going to college in a year and half (don't get me started on that!!)

Next big responsiblity check is today and tonight - I'll fill you in on details tomorrow!!

Thanks again

OK actually just for rent!!

So my darling 16 (almost 17) year old son got his drivers license 2 weeks ago.  We are pretty careful of where he is allowed to drive; but we did allow him to drive to school (3 miles from our house).  Yesterday on the way to school he had an accident!!  Thankfully, neither party was injured but my sons car is a mess!!  It is an Acura TL that my Mother had given him (2002) it was in excellent condition.

My insurance will now go sky high and the little darling can't get a job because of baseball season (he does work all summer as a camp counselor).

So I am renting him out for all kinds of jobs; picking up poop, dog walking, snow shoveling etc.

Now THAT is a perscription I need!!

My birthday was friday but we couldn't go out for family dinner (had to go to services)

Can't go out Saturday for family dinner - darling daughter has a gymnastics meet and will be gone until around 9 p.m.

Hubbys great idea lets go out for an early dinner before Superbowl - I DON'T think so - then I wouldn't be hungry for all the naughty Superbowl food!!

Because darling son has Broncitus he will actually be home for superbowl with us!!  He is a huge Steelers fan .... SO

GO STEELERS!!!
