Saint Bernard General Discussions / Re: Saints and Stairs....
« on: December 22, 2007, 01:38:01 pm »
I never knew that giant breeds should avoid steps altogether.  That creeps me out....because in our house it is almost impossible to avoid them.  The only way to let the dogs out into our backyard is through the basement door or the deck, which also has stairs down into the yard.  We live in mountainous western Maryland where it is hard to find a level piece of ground to build on.  Our deck is ground level at the front of the house, but 10 feet above the ground at the back of the house....and our basement is a walkout.

Now I'm going to worry about this.....

That is absolutely beautiful....o h my gosh....

I just have to tell you this, and please share it with your sister:  It really says alot about a person when they make such an effort to find a perfect, one of a kind gift like that. It shows that they understand the true meaning of giving.  Your sister must be a wonderful person, and obviously loves you very much.  Makes me wish I had a sister!

I am posting this to the general board because I want it to be seen by as many people as possible.

The other day I was going through my pictures on my computer and weeding out the ones I didn't want any more....and I think I accidentally wiped out all my pet pictures!!!  I didn't realize it until yesterday...by which time I had already emptied my Recycle Bin.

I got one of those programs that claims it can retrieve deleted files....but it seems to just be coming up with bullsh!t temporary internet files.

I am sooooooooooo upset.  This was a folder in My Documents that had 4 subfolders...D ogs, Cats, Pigs, and Other Animals.  Almost EVERY picture taken of my pets in the past 4 years was in it.  Many pictures of my beloved Samson, my Malamute that I lost last year.  These pictures are very dear to me.  I feel like such a schmuck for not having more of them backed up on disk....just another one of those things I always mean to get around to but didn't.

Does anyone here know any way that I can retrieve these files???

I have a large house, large garden and dog loving husband (it is quite unusual, but if it would be his will, here would be even more pets

Uh....does he have a brother?? LOLOL!! (ssssshhhh....d on't tell my husband I said that!)

I can't help but wonder....how did a registered therapy Newf end up in this situation?  I always thought people who put in the time and effort to train a therapy dog were not the kind to get rid of them easily. How did she end up being passed from home to home?

I remember the days when I could carry Bodhi up and down the stairs....hard to believe that was only about a year ago!  Now HE carries ME down the stairs....by thundering down them at break-neck speed and knocking over anything in his path! LOL!

Anything Non-Dog Related / WHY MEN ARE NEVER DEPRESSED
« on: December 20, 2007, 01:46:50 pm »
My husband sent me this email this morning.  Some of the things on the list are relevant, some are just silly.  But it got me to thinking....so I added some to the list.  Feel free to add your own....maybe we should send this to all the husbands! LOL!!

Men Are Just Happier People...
What do you expect from such simple creatures?

Your keep your last name all your life

The garage is all yours

Wedding/party/holiday plans take care of themselves

Chocolate is just another snack, not something you need to survive

You can be President

You can never be pregnant

You can wear a white T-shirt to a water park

You can wear NO shirt to a water park.

Car mechanics tell you the truth

The world is your urinal

Same work, more pay

Wrinkles add character

Wedding dress $5000 - Tux rental $100

People never stare at your chest when you're talking to them

New shoes don't cut, blister, or mangle your feet

One mood all the time

Phone conversations are over in 30 seconds flat

A five-day vacation requires only one suitcase

You can open all your own jars

You get extra credit for the slightest act of thoughtfulness
.
Your underwear is $8.95 for a 3 pack

Three pairs of shoes are more than enough

You are unable to see wrinkles in your clothes

Everything on your face stays its original color

The same hairstyle lasts for years, maybe decades

You only have to shave your face and neck

You can play with toys all your life

One wallet and one pair of shoes for all seasons

You can wear shorts no matter how your legs look

You can do your nails with a pocket knife

You have freedom of choice concerning growing a moustache

You can do Christmas shopping for 25 relatives on December 24 in 25 minutes

No wonder men are happier!!

*********************************

Here are some that I am adding:

No one expects you to remember birthdays and/or holidays, much less buy cards and/or gifts

Don't have to wear a tight, pinching, stiff, uncomfortable bra

You don't have to keep track of every item in your home...not being constantly asked, "Do we have...?"..."Where is......?"...."Have you seen my.....?"

Don't know or care if outfit matches

Don't know or care if kid's outfit matches, is dirty, is appropriate for the occasion, etc.

No yeast infections
or vaginitis
or cramps
or bloating
or breast exams
or 14 different kinds of reproductive cancer

No one expects you to be a patient, nurturing parent

The decor and condition of your home is no reflection on you as a person

No deep thoughts

No need for meaningful conversation (because of reason above!)

Anything Non-Dog Related / Re: The Snow is piling up
« on: December 20, 2007, 12:24:09 pm »
My dad lives in Ann Arbor...they got 10 inches of snow the other night.  I heard around Troy they got even more.  I am soooooo jealous....we had 15 inches on the ground a couple weeks ago, but it all melted and now all we have is TONS of ice.  I came back from a petsitting job this morning and slid right past my parking spot in the driveway and almost hit the dog fence!

I miss Michigan!!

We had an Irish Setter who did this....and the ONLY way to get her out of the car was to take her for another ride.  Once SHE decided she had ridden long enough, she would get out. Until she was satisfied, no amount of treats or shoving would move her! LOL!

I'll bet that is what is happening with your dog.  Especially if she is a Malamute....th ey are notoriously stubborn!  My Samson was the World's Most Wonderful Dog....but man, could he be bull-headed, lol....

Rottweiler Discussions / Re: I'm getting kicked out of my apartment
« on: December 20, 2007, 11:49:15 am »
This just goes to show you how little the average person knows about dogs.  They see a Rottie and immediately think *Aggressive*....they see a Cocker Spaniel and think "How Cute!".....little do they know that the Cocker is much more likely to attack them.

Here's a link to a page about aggressive dog breeds...it's one of the "better" ones I've seen, because it addresses many small breeds rather than just give the usual Rottweiler/Doberman/PitBull list.  You could print it off and tape it to your neighbor's doors...make them think about the neighborhood Chihuahua instead of just focusing on your dog...lol....

Rhodesian Ridgeback Discussions / Re: TO BIG, TO NICE, TO YOUNG??????
« on: December 18, 2007, 12:55:02 pm »
It's the old Nature vs. Nurture discussion.... .how much of behavior and temperament is bred and how much is learned?

My aunt's best friend has a Bassett Hound named Winston.  He is absolutely adorable, as all Bassetts are.  And he is mean as a snake with strangers.  When she takes him out many people try to come up and pet him because it doesn't even occur to them that a Bassett could be mean....and he tries to rip their fingers off.  His owner went through a VERY nasty divorce when Winston was a puppy....he was exposed to alot of anger and tension and even some violence by her ex.  I think this played a big role in shaping his temperament.  And I think your extra efforts to socialize your RRB play a big role in him being so friendly.  He obviously feels secure in his home pack, and that allows him to be more open to strangers.  Good for you!

Anything Non-Dog Related / Re: Anyone have a TempurPedic mattress?
« on: December 16, 2007, 05:30:06 pm »
Also, you don't need a mattress box for it if you have a platform bed, which definitely helps.

So if you have a regular box spring, you can't put a TempurPedic mattress on it?  I read that will void the warranty, but didn't know if it would mess up the mattress.

My husband and I went to the furniture store the other night so he could try one out.  He just thought it was okay....but for someone with back problems, it is Heaven on Earth!  The salesman had us try out the adjustable model with the massage feature....if I had one of those, I don't think I would ever get out of bed, lol.

Isn't it funny....you meet people all the time that you couldn't give a hoot about and forget about in a minute flat....but see some pictures of cute puppies and immediately fall in love, call family/coworkers/anyone around over to your computer to look at them, and spend the next two days telling everyone about them. LOL!  I think we are all definitely Animal People!
