Immediate Grooming needs for Newf?
« on: October 14, 2006, 09:07:58 am »
Hi!

We are so excited!!! We thought we were going to have to wait until NEXT weekend to pick up our Newfoundland, but we just found out that we get to pick her up tomorrow! ;D
We weren't entirely prepared yet because we thought we had this week to pick up everything we needed. So....what would you say would be needed immediately in regards to grooming gear? All I have here is a slicker brush & nail clippers for Cooper. He doesn't require much more than that. I remember with our last Newfy using a rake, but I can't remember what else.

Thank you in advance for any information.
Blessings! :)

Furminators are good to keep the shedding under control, and cuticle scissor to trim the fur between her pads and toes.  Start doing the fur trim early so she gets used to having her paws handled. Try to get her on a regular schedule of grooming so she will stay calm and behave while being brushed, etc.

I'm so excited for you...

PICTURES PLEASE!!!

Thank you so much for your quick reply! :) I really appreciate that! The cuticle scissors are such a great idea for the fur between the pads & toes! I will definitely try that! I am so sorry to ask this, but could you tell me what a furminator is?

I will definitely post pictures. My husband is driving out there tomorrow to pick her up. I wish we could all go, but I have a house full of sick kids & it will be a 10 hour drive round trip. He won't be home until the evening. I will take lots of pictures try to post them late tomorrow night. :)

Thank you again for your help & advice!  ;D
Blessings! :)

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner!!  I use the medium size for the Newfs and it seems to be just fine.  It really is great to keep the shedding to a minimum!

When you use the cuticle scissors, just make sure the points of the scissors point out (away from the skin) so there is a much lower chance of nipping the skin.  By keeping the fur on her feet trimmed, she won't slip as much and she won't develop mats on her feet.  She'll also look a lot neater.  We can't have her marching around in shaggy bedroom slippers!! ::) ::)

I can't wait to see her!  What's her name?

Sorry about the sick kids!  That's tough!

Thank you so much!  ;D
My husband is going to Petsmart today and will pick up a medium size furminator, then.  ;D

Thanks for the tip on the cuticle scissors.

Her name is Polly and she is 3 years old.

Thanks for your kind words about the kids. They have been so sweet. Thankfully, it was just a sore throat and really bad cold/cough. We don't handle stomach viruses here very well. They will be REALLY excited to see Polly tomorrow night! I can't wait to see the looks on their faces when daddy brings her in.  ;D

Thank you again so much! Have a great day!  :D
Blessings! :)

Hi Jaime!

We are STILL waiting for her to get here. John is stuck in traffic & they are about an hour & a half, or so away! We are going crazy over here!!! We just can't wait for them to get home! I think I called about 20 times!  ;D

I will take lots of pictures & post them soon.  :D
Oh...John got to see Duke & Hammie. He took some photos of them, too.

(Duke is Bear's half brother). :) I am so jealous that my husband got to see him in person and I didn't.  >:(

Have a great night! :)
Blessings! :)
