Sad for my Sophie- Update
« on: November 20, 2008, 08:52:31 am »

Saw the Surgeon today and Sophie's bones still aren't ready for surgery. Back again on Dec 10th for new X-rays. Right knee is definitely blown but doc says after a week or so the dogs pain level reduces dramatically since there is no longer a tendon attached to keep injuring. More pain meds for about a week then she should feel better although still hobbling. Small consolation is in a dog this young there is nothing we did to cause this. He say's it's underlying bone structure which is 99% hereditary. Don't get me started on the breeder again.

Sweet thing with brother Syrus. As soon as I got back and let him out I was afraid he was going to go over and start harassing and wanting to play with her. Instead he immediately lay down next to her and licked her ear. She leaned into him and closed her eyes, he on alert. Syrus the protector.

Thanks for all the good wishes and prayers. We will need them again in a few weeks but for now all is calm. :)

Ohhhh, I'm sooo sorry that you are all going through this!  I'll be praying for a quick, easy surgery & recovery for Miss Sophie.  In the meantime, I know that you have the best treatment for her, b/c all those snuggles & tummy rubs will make both of you feel better right now.  Big (((hugs)) to you and please give Sophie a "get well soon" kiss on her head from me.   :-*

How is Syrus doing on the anti-inflammatories?  Is he moving more comfortably, now?  Poor pups going through this, but they are blessed to have a mom that's taking such good care of them!

that is so young for a torn ACL.  But you're right.  just holding the leg up and barely toe touching are classic signs of a busted ACL.  I've been through 3 ACL replacements and have 1 more to go (hopefully i won't have problems with that last one though.  the vet said there's a good chance it may never go out on Grace)
And why is the vet doing TPLO?  The only benefit for a TPLO is a faster recovery time.  A simple ACL replacment surgory is 1/2 the cost of a TPLO.  I asked my vet about that when Grace had her right ACL done in February.  He told me they do TPLO's for show dogs a lot where it's important to get the dog back on its feet in a shorter amount of time.  he said the added feature of TPLO is the plates they put around the knee, but that causes problems too.  The down side of TPLO is the extra cost.
You may want to ask about not getting the full blown TPLO.  That really bites that both legs are blown.   it will be tough to watch her limp and hobble around...but getting her through the recovery will be a breeze after a while.  it becomes part of you and you a part of it.  She'll be fine.

Both my vet and the specialist she sent me to said they don't usually do the ACL replacement on the giant breeds because a huge percentage of the time they do not last or hold. Too much stress by the sheer weight. They have had much better long term success with the TPLO.

But you can bet your bettootee I will be asking a million questions tomorrow. First one being is the TPLO really the best way to go? Maybe TPLO in the totally blown leg and ACL replacement on the torn one?

I'll be up all night reading everything I can on these procedures. One thing for sure for those of you who know about the dresser drawer effect in the leg. Sophie's is definitely off its hinges!

I'll post an update when I've had a chance to drill the surgeon. Just fix her!
