I read ALOT.
Me too. A frightening amount. It scares me how much money I have tied up in books! I'll just mention some people I haven't seen yet.
Ladies first, and I'll stick to people whose books I've read or re-read in the last month or so, just to keep it managable.
Diana Gabaldon The perfect "fat airport" author for men and women alike. There's nothing better than Outlander.
Patricia Cornwell up to The Last Precinct. I've given up on the latest ones.
Perri O'Shaunessy is better than Grisham by a mile.
Anne McCaffrey To he** with the vampires, she's got DRAGONS. And telepaths. And crystal singers...
Patricia Kennealy Morrison Yes, she's crazy, but the woman can write. Just don't touch Blackmantle.
Jacqueline Carey Well, the Kushiel stuff's good.
Melanie Rawn DON'T START THE EXILES BOOKS! I've been waiting like, 8 years for the third one, and I'm convinced she's NEVER going to write it and solve the mystery
JK Rowling--YES, I'm a Potterite. Wanna make somethin' of it?
CJ Cherryh was and IS a phenom.
Faye Kellerman can not only write a procedural, she manages to include religion and ethics!
Not to mention the hardworking women who have jumped over the wall of the romance ghetto to the mystery side of the street:Â Kay Hooper, Iris Johansen, Tami Brown, Erica Spindler, Maggie Shayne, Suzanne Brockmann, Jayne Anne Krentz/Amanda Quick and of course the ultimate escapee, Ms Nora Roberts and her alter ego, JD Robb.
Now for the men:
John Sandford Lucas Davenport is the next best thing to Travis McGee--and if you don't know who Travis is, go find
John D. MacDonald's books at the library NOW.
Harlan Ellison is the ultimate master of the shorter forms, fiction and non-fiction both.
Robert Ludlum is STILL the best of of the spy guys.Â
Larry Niven does the best hard sci-fi in the business, no matter who his writing partner is.
Faye's husband
Jonathan Kellerman is the best there is at the psycho-drama thing.
I don't recommend getting involved with
Robert Jordan and his Wheel of Time series. I passed the event horizon of that 12 years ago, was sucked into the vortex, and expect to be crushed anytime by the black hole of his plot. Certainly, I don't expect him to live long enough to actually FINISH it.Â
Then again, Stephen King finished the Dark Tower, so maybe there's hope.Â
