Exactly!  We had the grill out last weekend (yay!) and put the cover on it as the forecast called for rain.  You'd have thought we had summoned a demon dog-eater from h*ll the way Bear acted.  From across the yard he postured and barked.  As we walked by on our way to the house he cowered, hid behind my legs, and wouldn't go near it.  ::)  He still gives it a wary glance when we walk by. Big goofy!

Last week I left the house for about a half hour and came home to the contents of our trash bin spread all over the house.  The dogs were lying quietly in the the only clean space on the first floor.  Heavy sigh, started cleaning up, and Nakita ambles over to see what's going on, comes in close for a 'hello' and belches garbage breath all over my face. :P  Couldn't help but love her.  ::)

I'd like to assure you that they grow out of it, but Nakita is 11, Bear is 5...  ;)  Just live, learn, and enjoy the ride!

I brought Bear home this morning after his overnight stay in the emergency hospital. They weaned him off the diazepam drip around midnight and he's been seizure free since his first seizure there. He seems his usual self, if not a bit tired. He's eating fine (good poops) and is very snuggly. No apparent lingering side effects from the seizures. And Nakita is very happy to have her companion home.  :-* 

We're increasing his pheno doses to hopefully quell further episodes. If he continues to break through I'll have to consider adding another med. I'm just sooooo relieved that he's okay. I took the day off work to be with him, and am nervous about leaving him alone tomorrow and Friday. I hope the added pheno will keep him safe.

Thanks so much for all your good thoughts and prayers. It's so comforting to have a strong, understanding, and loving community behind us!

Bear had 6+ seizures in 90 minutes early this morning (3am).  The worst cluster yet for our big guy.  I gave him a dose of pheno but they were coming closer and closer and we were concerned about his body temperature.  Plus he had a focal seizure and bit his tongue or lip -- blood everywhere -- though the bleeding stopped before we got him into the car.  He's been at the emergency clinic since 5:30 this morning, he had a seizure upon arrival.  Scared me to death because he was strapped to a stretcher (he was postictal in the car and wouldn't get up) and his seizures are super physically active.  They gave him diazepam immediately to calm him, then started a diazepam infusion about 6:30.  No seizures since so that's good.  They'll keep him for six hours after they stop the drip so he'll probably have to be there overnight.  I'm told he's eating and drinking, even with the drip, so he must be feeling better.  I hated leaving him there.  He's such a sweet, gentle soul and he must be scared.  And I like to be involved in his care; handing it off to someone else is just not my style.

What a horrible night.  Plus, we just bought a house and are seriously cash-strapped.  The estimate for his treatment was about $2000.  Good lord.  There was no question about our doing it, but it adds another dimension to the stress and concern we feel about Bear.  I hope this new behavior doesn't mean his epilepsy is getting worse.  I hope and I pray...

This is an interesting post and I'm happy to share my two bits.  My saints are both door protective... they bark at knocks, the doorbell, shouts at the door, and they're alert to the sound of the screen door opening.  I've had to really work with them regarding when to be protective and when to let down.  Bear has to 'lie down' when welcoming guests as he starting nipping at elbows in a 'not really hurtful but definitely aggressive' way.  Nakita will take my lead but still barks for awhile when a new guest arrives -- mostly out of excitement I think but maybe also some anxiety.  Having new guests give a yummy treat is a winner, especially with Bear, who can be a little nervous but is fantastically food motivated.  They both have to sit and be quiet to receive the treat.

In my experience, it's best to be in charge and clear about expectations at the door and with guests.  And it doesn't take much to do it.  Good luck and keep us posted!

Seems like a win all the way around... Whiskey gets a full-time buddy, this pup gets a good home, the rescues get another foster-brother, and you get your second golden.  Go for it!  (and post lots of pics!)  :)
