in reply to leahs second question, gulp, the same way he did the rat who came out from behind the couch once too often,I have talked to linda volk at beach-nut newfies often, she is a supremely kind and knowledgeable woman, she has bred newfies for 35 years! she has about 22 of them, she owns a large, wooded, tract of land in tennessee where her newfies have freedom to hunt, she told me also that they regularly bring her back squirrels, skinned! newfoudlands are powerful hunters!!! don't underestimate them in this regard, however, this has nothing to do with their other innate qualitys!!! it is just another facet of their hypnotizing, uniqe personalities!!!!!

so true!!! ;D,a newfies ability to see and know everything!!!! that goes on around him never fails to amaze me,I can't count the number of times I've walked bear and he would suddenly stop and gaze intently at the high voltage wires, when I would follow his gaze, invariably there would be a bird perched there! about 40 or 50 yards away, or he would stop, sit down, and gaze intently up at the sky, sloooowly!! moving his head, always it would be buzzards, wild geese, or birds high up in the sky! his hearing is so sensitive that he can hear a cat walking through the grass in the dark in the front yard!,I can tell just by the sound of his bark that its a cat and often which cat!,and I can also tell just by the sound of his bark,to what degree whatever is out there is a threat!I firmly believe that being in the company of newfies amplify our own sense's to a degree not otherwise possible!!!

bear is 14 months old,we have 2 cats and a kitten who  he plays with all the time, both inside and out, they've never come to any harm yet!!!,they also eat out of the same bowl and the kitten often sleeps with him at night, curled up, almost invisible, between his front legs and against his chest, the cats often come up outside and roll around in front of him, inviteing a game!!!of their own volition!!,bear always obliges, we also have a boxer ,and I think pit cross, who somebody dumped and left to starve to death about 2 months ago,and a 2 year old magnificent beagle!!!, who was also dumped, they have some ferocious romps together!!!, if you understood newfies you would know that their dedication and loyalty and love towards their own family is absolute!!!!!!, and if necesarry, he would die to protect them!! its just that the original indians of newfoundland used them extensively to hunt with and that hunting instinct remains super strong with them to this day, if you read the lewis and clark story closely, than you saw he used his newwfie to bring him back squirrels to eat, in his own words,as many as he wanted!!! ;D

bear will bring just one grain! of dogfood from his bowl, always!when I'm not looking! and lay it down in the exaaact!!! center!!! of where I sit,and there it is!several times it has been a bright, shiny new penny,I don't know where he found those!once again, always in the exact, precise same spot! a few times when I have walked him he would pick up a particuliarly big elm leaf, and, after we came back in,lay it in my lap very gently, than sit back and look at me expectantly with those indescribeable newfie eyes! I can,t count the number of times i'd be walking him and he'd make a faster than sight jump and come down with a monarch butterfly in his jaws whereupon he will stop, turn around, and lay it in my hand with an unmistakeably proud look in his eyes!,sometimes it would be dead without a mark on it,sometimes it would be alive and flutter off out of the palm of my hand!!! he has done both the leaf thing and the butterfly thing sometimes when I let him out by himself when he came back in!!! I wonder, has anybody else had their newfies do this?

Food Discussion & Information / Re: chocolate chip cookies are deadly!!!

bear made a complete, rapid recovery, however one of his early health problems was, i'm allwayyyys petting him and one day I began feeling several raised bumps on his back, about the size of a nickol, this alarmed me to say the least,I saw potential hotspots, about a week later,he was behind me on the couch, just gazing at me with those indescribeably human like eyes,I know all newfie owners will know what I mean! ha, when I suddenly noticed the skin over his right eye suddenly puffed out slightly and turned bright!!!red, within 20 minutes his eye was swelled comepletely shut!we rushed him to the vet,it turned out to be hives,it was early spring, the vet said he was either allergic to an inhalant or most likely his dogfood, she put us on some verrrry! expensive hypoallergenic dogfood gave him a shot and a 3 day supply of steroids, all the hives vanished by that night and have never recurred,we feed him the super enriched diamond dog food,it was recommended to me by the most knowledgeable breeder I have ever spoken to,linda volk at beach-nut newfies, she has bred newfies for 35 years,it's cheap, they love it, and it's very!! good for newfies, but I think you can only get it at feedmills, not sure, eventually I realized it wasn't the dogfood and put him back on diamond super enriched dogfood, and theres never been a further recurrance of  hives,so you're right and an astute observation!,he doe's have a history of allergy!

Newfoundland Discussions / funny beware of dog sign
« on: December 25, 2005, 11:41:07 pm »
true!,I once saw a beware of dog sign on a huge wrought iron gate set into a concrete wall,a huuuge!! multi-million dollar mansion lay about 50 yards beyond the gate in a straight line, several bigggg!!! rotweilers were milling around it,the sign showed 3 rotweilers unmistakeably riseing up into an alert posture in that sloooow!! menacing way, above the picture and over the dogs heads it said,we can make it to the gate in 3.5 seconds, and at the bottom it said, can you? ;D

I promise to post pictures of bear if I ever learn how to make this handheld video camera work and send the film through my firewire port into my computer!no instructions!but to get back to the chocolate chip cookies,I think you should be very leery of believeing anything!!!! you read on the internet from a supposed expert!!!!! i.e. newfies don't bark,ha,ha, newfies as a protection dog are rated as low to non-existant,ha ha ha ha ha,just let somebody break into your house or threaten you in any way, and they'll be verrrry!!! sorry they read that!!! I could post some very good true stories about that, they happened to me,a woman friend brought over an unopened package of chocolate chip cookies several months ago,we proceeded to eat them and bear got about  half the package, about a half hour later, he was laying at the foot of my bed and I knew instantly something very bad was wrong just by the way he held his head on his paws,he proceeded to stagger up,it took everything he had!!! to make it to his feet, and proceeded to stagger down the corridor, first running into one wall, than the other, when he stood still in the frontroom, his hind leg would sloooowly begin to collapse under under him and I thought he was going to collapse but he managed to make it to the couch and sit down, his breatheing was so laboured you could hear it from the other end of the house! his heart was beating so hard you could seeit hitting his ribcage from several feet away, this happened about 2 O'clock in the morning, absolutely no chance of getting him to a vet here,he was fine by the next morning,if a little weak, and made a total recovery,he ate only half a package of chocolate chip cookies and he weighed 125 than,so beware of believing what you read on the internet!!!,or what a vet tells you!as I doubt anybody really knows!!!but what I am telling you is what actually happened to me!!!!!so beware!!!!,pardon the long post,by the way, does anybody have any newfie protection stories to post,II think that would be a verrrt!!! interesting thread!!!!
