I really admire you; You have gone through he** and back to do right by this pup.  I have been following this saga since the beginning and every post you have made about this shows the concern in your heart for Petra.  I do not envy the position that you have been in throughout all of this but I truly look up to you for the courage and fortitude that you have displayed.  Godspeed to Petra and I wish you peace.  Thank you for letting us share this experience with you and grow by that.

I'll grasp along with you.  Call him and talk to him if you can.  Find out if this is truly professional guard training or something else.  Make sure that you get a guarantee that they will keep you up to date on the progress or lack of.  If a professional will evaluate and possibly train her for this, it could just be the chance that she needs.  Good luck, which ever way you decide to go, my thoughts are with you , your family and Petra.

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Re: my dogs jump on everyone!
« on: December 11, 2005, 01:00:06 am »
I used the same method as Stella did when I trained Feste (brindle dane).  It does work very well.  Again like Stella, my avatar is an invitation-only event, and he is only allowed to do it with me, something he knows very well.

Another thing that has helped with the jumping on other people that I have done with Feste and am now working on with Chance (mantle labra-dane), is the command 'Gently'.  I can walk up to either Chance or Feste with a dripping t-bone in my hand and say 'gently' and they will stand fairly calmly and take it gently from my hand when I offer it to them.  Feste has also learned that this relates to meeting new people, as well.  If I say gently when we meet people, he knows to not jump or run up to them.  Chance is starting to learn this part of it.  Feste's next step with this will be in meeting other dogs.

I taught them 'gently' with food 1st.  Put them in a 'sit' with a treat.  The treat should be something they like but aren't totally nuts over to start with.  While they are sitting, place your stronger hand under their chin to prevent them from lunging at the treat.  With the other hand bring the treat to him, saying 'gently' at the same time.  It only took about a week  or so for Feste to get this, Chance about 3 weeks (he's much more energetic and enthusiastic - lol).

Hope that this might be of some help to you.

You went above and beyond what anyone else would have done.  Please don't let yourself believe that you failed her for a second - you rescued her from the ones who failed her and you gave her a good and loving home.  My thoughts will be with you.

Rottweiler Discussions / Re: I love my dog but...

I baby gate mine out of certain rooms at times, and the kitchen (cat's "safe" room)all the time (they could step over it, but for some reason respect it).
I take the child-rearing approach to it when they 'fuss', which is to ignore it.  They usually will stop on their own in a few minutes when they realize that it isn't accomplishing anything.  The thing is to not react or give attention to the behvior, which is what they are looking to get.
Mine are younger (1.5, 1.5 and 4 y/o) so if this is deeply entrenched behavior, it may not be so simple.  If you have crate-trainer your Rotti, you could try crating him, rather than gating him out of the room.

Welcome and Kudos for taking in a rescue.  He's a handsome fellow.  Hope to see lots more of him.

I use the Diamond Large Breed, Haven't really noticed a reduction in the amount, but I don't see them going quite as often.  Overall, I'm pleased with the food.

As for disposal, I'm pretty lazy, If I catch it fresh, I hose it into the ground to fertilize the grass (what little they haven't torn up in the backyard).  If it's aged some, I usually turn it into the soil arounsd the bushes, again for 'cheap' fertilizer.

Although I hate that he has anything wrong, at least you now know what you are dealing with.  What is the treatment for this?  I am very glad to hear that he is doing better this morning.
