That's so adorable! I love when dogs have favorite toys and stuff that they carry around. I've never seen one carry a blankey...that is too cute.

Helpful Groups & Dogs in Need / Macy - Rottweiler mix in Iowa needs a home!
« on: November 25, 2006, 06:37:37 am »
This beautiful rottweiler mix is up for adoption. She was rescued from a bad and neglectful situation and is now at my house looking for a new home! She was rescued on Thanksgiving so I named her Macy, after the Macy's Parade.

She looks into my eyes with her sweet brown eyes and I just melt! She is very trusting despite the crappy life on a chain that she has lived. She gets along great with kids, other dogs, and so far seems ok around my cats. She loves people a lot & is a big sweetie. She has never known what it is like to live in a nice warm house full of a family who loves her. She has spent her life tied up on a chain. Sometimes her owners would feed her, many times they would forget. There were many times she would get her chain wrapped around things and was unable to reach her dog house or food or water. Kids would ride down the alley and throw things at her and tease her. Despite that, she loves children! She's never had a soft bed. Her nights were spent sleeping on a cold slab of cement under her dog house (if she could reach the house, that is). Please give this girl the wonderful forever home she deserves!

She is a very well behaved dog and is obsessed with the couch - it's all so new to her! She is about 3 years old, as her owners got her when she was a puppy and had been chained since then.

If you are interested in adopting her, please email me - danielle@fdhumane.com - for an adoption application.

I believe she is already spayed but she's going to the vet Monday afternoon to have that confirmed. She will also get heartworm tested and brought up to date on her vaccinations.

She is located near Fort Dodge, IA. Transport can probably be arranged if needed!

Saint Bernard Pictures / Barney's little buddy
« on: October 15, 2006, 02:29:03 pm »
I just loved this picture I took of Barney and his little buddy Weebles. I posted about Weebles awhile back...he has cerebellar hypoplasia and has trouble walking because he is so wobbly. He is doing great though...as good as can be expected and he is a happy guy. He is getting a wheel chair when he is full grown and I just ordered him a stroller to push him around now when I take him places since he is starting to get bigger and harder to carry.

Barney is the only dog that will actually lie down and play with Weebles on the ground/floor and Weebles loves that! Barney is now 8 1/2 months old.

Here are some recent pictures of Barney. He will be 8 months old on September 30th.

Penny mentioned that Teddy is all legs at this age...I've noticed that Barney is pretty leggy too. :)

Hey everyone! I thought I would pass along some really GREAT Saints that are for adoption in case anyone is interested or knows of someone interested! They are in Iowa. Katie and Abby are Barney's littermates so I can vouch for their awesome dispositions!

Mixed Breed Pictures / Re: Weebles

His mom is a collie mix and his littermates all look like collie/shepherds. He's the odd one of the bunch...in every way.

His wobbles aren't too bad when he is calm but when he is excited its like he just gets ahead of himself. When he is calm he can walk across the room without falling but when he is excited it's like he can't keep up with his legs.

He was chewing on a toy a little while ago and he was perfectly still while concentrating on the toy. No wobbles or tremors at all!

How old is he? I noticed when some of my dogs were going through teething their ears would do strange things.

I am the one with the wobbly pup, Weebles so I thought I would give my 2 cents.

First off, I see what you are saying. I am passionate about spay/neuter and educating people about s/n and I know that the reason millions of animals die in shelters is because people don't spay/neuter. I've paid for many animals to be fixed, I work at a s/n clinic, and serve on the board for the shelter so I can definitely see where you are coming from.

With that said, Weebles is absolutely worth helping (and most people who meet him would agree). I see no reason to euthanize a perfectly happy puppy who brings so much joy to our lives. It's difficult to draw the line when you are emotionally invested in an animal. Looking in as outsider, it's probably easier to look at the big picture.

But I feel that our situation is a bit different. The shelter is not spending a lot of money on this puppy. The shelter could not afford to spend a lot of money on this puppy. We are able to afford a wheelchair for him because someone heard his story and donated the money FOR him. She never would have donated to the shelter...she isn't in Iowa, she's in NYC and never heard of our shelter until she heard about Weebles. Weebles' story touched her heart and that is why she donated. So to this person his life is worth it...and that is how she chose to spend her money, bless her heart! This donation might not make a huge difference in the big scheme of things, but it'll make a huge difference to Weebles and the people that love him. It's similar to the starfish story I guess.

If a shelter, rescue group, or even an individual chooses to spend a lot of funds or resources to help one animal then I think that is up to them where to draw the line. Everyone has different priorities when it comes to causes they believe in.

I love the story that was posted about the handicapped puppy!

Mixed Breed Discussion / Re: New foster pup - Weebles
« on: August 30, 2006, 03:51:56 pm »
Weebles is doing great and gaining weight already! I found a wheelchair company that has made wheelchairs for CH dogs in the past (http://www.eddieswheels.com/html/quad.html)

Someone heard about Weebles and that person donated 2/3 of the cost of the wheelchair! So now we just have to come up with another $250 to be able to afford the wheelchair. I am so excited because now it is so much more obtainable and someday he'll be able to run and play without having to tumble over! Wooo!

I feel that Weebles has something very special to bring this world!
