His head hits my hips and I'm 5'2".  If he were to stand on his back paws, he would be almost 6'

It truly amazes me that some people would do that.  GIve the dog a little dignity in death!

No, he is definitely long and gangly, which is why I wasn't sure about the Presa and thought more Dane, because he's all leg.  I was thinking of contacting a Dane rescue as well but will also try the other rescue that was listed for the Presa.  He may end up being muscly once we get him back to full weight/health.  He had a lot of muscle atrophy from being in the shelter for 2 months and we're finally able to take a 30 minute walk without him stumbling over his feet.
Thanks again for the help!

Hi Everyone-
Thank you again for your help and advice regarding Jimbo & Fergie.  I contact the Mastiff rescue and they would not accept him because he is not a purebred Mastiff.  Looking at his picture they told me he is a Great Dane.  Would you say he is a Dane a Mastiff or a mix?  The shelter listed him as a Mastiff.  I know it's hard to tell now as he is underweight and his ear flaps are missing.  What do you think?

Thank you Julie...I printed out the pages and plan to post them on my refrigerator.  There is a LOT on there I'm not doing.  Your "monkey's" are adorable.  I will have to post a picture of Fergie once she's healed.
Thank you again for your information and help! ;D

Thank you to all who have posted.  I have actually contacted the mastiff rescue that was posted and am waiting to hear back from them.  Right now we are "co-existing" in a seperated household where we alternate every 2 hours who gets to be in the family room with us.  This way they both get family time.  We actually did take Fergie to the shelter with us to meet Jimbo.  They got along find and we took them on a long walk when we got home.  The issues started about 48  hours later when it was just me and my son home.  That is when Fergie started to aggress on Jimbo.  I realize in hind-sight that she doesn't respect me as her pack leader and is very territorial of me and my son.  If it's just my husband home, they can exist in the same room with no issues.  I have read Cesar Milan's "Be the Pack Leader" and we are in the process of waiting for a recommended Dog Behaviorist to come back from vacation to start taking Fergie to training.  I realize now that a lot of it stemmed from the fact that while my husband would treat her as animal/dog/Fergie I would treat her like my own child, hence he has respect and she feels like she is my alpha.  I'm working on trying to be Calm Assertive with her and it does take a lot of work - considering I've let her get away with her nonsense for 2 1/2 years.

One issue we are finding is that not a lot of dogs like Jimbo, and some people think it's because he has no ears...the shelter thinks his previous owners tried to crop his ears at home and mutilated them...so because he looks 'different' some dogs feel that is a sign of weakness in their pack.  Anyone ever heard of that?

I do agree that Fergie is very Alpha with dogs and because Jimbo is larger than her, she cannot establish her dominance as resident dog and is lashing out because she feels her place in the pack is slipping due to his size.

I appreciate everyone's help on this board and no need to apologize on behalf of the first poster. I tend to skip over posts that don't offer appropriate help.   :)

Helpful Groups & Dogs in Need / URGENT - Need Mastiff Rescue in MA

Hi All-
We rescued a Mastiff from a Shelter on Sunday and brought him into our home with our 2 1/2 yo female Bullmastiff.  Today my female aggressed on him and they got into a fight where I need stiches and my female needs stiches.  The male (rescue) has a few cuts.  He is NOT dog aggressive at all...this was completely the fault of my female.  I do not want to put him back in the shelter.  Can anyone give me the name of a Mastiff Rescue in the Massachusetts area for me to get him into a loving foster home.  He had spent 2 months at the shelter and does not deserve that kind of life.  We just need to get our female straightened out and I can't just keep him in my kitchen until that happens.

THANK YOU!!

This was cross posted on another board I'm on.  ...just wanted to let everyone know that I am fostering a Bullmastiff pup. She is almost 7 months old. She is fawn with black mask. She has been spayed and up-to-date on vaccines. She also has papers. He new name is Bruiser. She came from Oklahoma. Her original owners tied her in the backyard when they got her at 8 weeks old and never let her off the chain. She is now living a normal life. I own a dog daycare and she is there with me everyday. She loves my Bull and English Mastiffs. We are working on her basic obedience and teaching her manners. She knows "no jump" "off" "sit" and sometimes "down". If you know anyone that may be interested in adopting her please let me know. She is the
sweetest little girl. Oh yea, she is 60 lbs at 6 months. She is very compact. I really do hope that I can find this little girl a forever home soon.

Big Dogs with Jobs / Help Our Military Dogs!!

When forwarding this email, please remember to use Bcc and delete my email address.

I was listening to the radio, as usual, on my way to work the other day (KMPS Seattle) and `Stubbs' (their regular mid-day broadcaster)had a segment interview with Support Military Working dogs. They (KMPS) do a lot of community outreach, and Stubbs, in particular always has her sights and ears up on animal needs in the Seattle Area. This particular interview made me very embarrassed and sad
that we have no desert gear for our Military Working Dogs in Iraq……none, nada, zero help from the military to help solve the serious issues with our K9 troops.

The heat in the desert, along with the blowing sand makes it
difficult for these dogs to do their jobs. They need chilly coats and foot gear and goggles. They also need containers for their food so the rats don't eat the food faster than they can get it served to the dogs. Their leashes are wearing out....... These are the SAME dogs that SERVE AND PROTECT our troops!
The troops, right now, are doing things like duct-taping their own personal socks on the dog's feet so that the melting asphalt doesn't burn their pads. The melted asphalt burns their pads and blocks the ability for the dogs to dissipate the heat through their pads.

To outfit a single dog takes $300. Their goal is to outfit all 45 kennels, approximately 300 dogs, with chilly-vests, Muttluks (boots), and goggles…… *MY* math says this is just short of $100,000. These dogs are not getting the equipment they need from the military……..I'd like every dog club in the country to know of this problem……. I think we need to help where we can. These military dogs are working
in mind-boggling, daunting conditions.

If every person on this list gave $10………. It would be a huge chunk of change for these people to properly outfit these working military dogs. I sure don't think these dogs should be dependant on private donations..... .......I think our MILITARY FUNDING should be helping cover these needs......... but apparently, PRIVATE donations is all
they have to work on for the solution.

I'm going to bring this web site to the attention of every dog group AND CARING PERSON that I can think of……… I think we should be helping where we can. I also plan to let the appropriate political offices know that we are dropping the ball on this……. These dogs need help….. the troops need help to help their dogs…….. our military funding should be doing this job.......

We are DOBERMAN people……. The Cadillac of the Military Working Dog!!! … We need to be involved!!!

Go here: http://www.supportmilitaryworkingdogs.org/index.html

Download the PDF brochure (lower left of the home page), read it, and contact Starline Nunley, the founder (She is a member of Gem City Dog Club) if you have other questions………. Read the info, and judge for yourselves……. I think I just found a $20.00 bill in my winter coat pocket as I was putting it away for the season…… it is ear-tagged for
this project. I think I'll pass on my latte' next week, too…..

……..permission granted to CROSSPOST until your brains fall out…… get the word out to every dog club you can find…… these people are working to solve a serious MILITARY WORKING DOG PROBLEM that needs money to solve the issues. It really needs to be sponsored by our war funds, but apparently it isn't 'covered' under the current funding of the war.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Quote from their website:
How did the idea for this project come about?
Starline Nunley, a member of the Gem City Dog Obedience Club, started with the idea of helping her son, Major Parker Frawley, who is a Longbow, Apache helicopter fighter pilot stationed in Iraq. She asked him if he would like a Cooling Vest to help him cope with the typically very hot temperatures encountered there. His reply was "Mom, I am and we (soldiers) are all right. The military provides
for us very well, but dogs have different needs. It is so hot that they are having trouble doing their job and that puts us all in danger."
Temperatures sometimes reach as high as 145 degrees. The dogs cannot work for more than an hour to an hour-and-a-half before being completely exhausted. Our troops are provided with proper equipment but the dogs are our first line of defense in many situations. They've been forgotten and have no protection against the heat, blowing sands and rough terrain.
About Me
This is as tough of a situation as any rescue group should ever have to deal with, my friends.
About a month ago, we were contacted by a vet's office regarding a breeder with 18 female boxers and 2 male boxers who were unable to reproduce and make a profit for him. He is now willing to turn them over to TBR. We are tentatively scheduled to go in to pull all 20 dogs out of the facility at one time and transport them directly to the vet's office for physical evaluation and temperament testing. From there we literally have nowhere to go. We have a generous donation that came in at the onset of this issue; but now we need people. And we need ideas. Please understand your ideas and input are coveted right now, and we will be reading them all. I must ask, however, that you not expect acknowledgemen t or reply, unless we are calling in your offer of service or space.
We are tentatively set to pull all 20 dogs this Wednesday at an undisclosed location in mid-western OK. All available help will need to meet at the vet clinic, so that the real question becomes, ' how many crates will fit in your vehicle for you to transport to 'who knows where', and how many can you stack in your garage until enough people step forward to foster until forever happens for each and every one of these dogs? (Outdoor housing will most likely be necessary with adequate shelter and fencing provided.)
We will work as quickly as possible through tomorrow to confirm and plan this rescue. Please pass the word far and wide to other hearts of compassion who can help pay for boarding, feeding, and vetting, training and loving these unfortunate boxers.
