Great Dane Discussions / The Last Week
« on: November 06, 2005, 07:32:49 am »
Hi Everyone,

I haven't been here for awhile.  We've been really busy trying to get ready to leave.  We have a final date of December 3rd.  I just wanted to give you all an update on how everything has been.

Last week started out horrible.  Lily, who we were told had gone through a heat cycle right before we got her, went into heat.  It doesn't bother me, but I was not expecting it.  Anyway, I decided against taking her out for walks because there are a lot of other dogs in my neighborhood.  Well I was out there with her last week, and out of nowhere, a dog comes charging my fence.  It was the neighbors blue pit.  I didn't think I had anything to worry about.  My fence is 6 ft. and pretty solid.  So the next day I'm out there with Lily again and my neighbors pit does it again.  Only this time he loosens one of the boards.  I put Lily back inside right away and went to fix the fence.  Later that night my husband takes Lily out and the pit rams the fence again and knocks the board completely loose and charges inside.  Lily and him went at it fighting before my husband even knew what was going on.  Let me tell you how scared I was.  I heard the comotion and ran out there and find my husband trying to seperate them.  I whistled to Lily and she turned to come towards me and the pit grabbed her ear and wouldn't let go.  He ripped a three inch gash in it.  I've never seen so much blood in my life.  My neighbor comes running up to the fence and calls his dog off because he's still trying to go after her.  We finally get the two dogs seperated completely and I called my vet.  She had to go in and she got 14 stitches and an E collar.  The E collar lasted all of 15 minutes once I got her home.  It's been 6 days now since this happened and she still hasn't scratched at the stitches so I don't think I'll have to put it back on her.

Anyway, I didn't know that a male dog would fight a dog in heat, but I guess I was misinformed.  And the owner of the other dog not only didn't apologize, but didn't even offer to help pay the vet bill which was hefty.  But Lily is ok and that's what counts.

So that combined with having to get new passports, all get medical screenings, having one child with the flu, and enough paperwork to put a lawyers firm to shame has kept me from my favorite place.  BPO!!!!!

I probably won't be here much between now and when we leave, so let me offer you all a very happy Thanksgiving and a wonderful Christmas and New Year.  I wish everyone luck on the calendar contest, puppy kisses to all of Raven and Lily's pup pals, and a big hello to all the newbies.  I'll miss you all, but hopefully I won't be off line too long.  And Jaime, if you could put one of the calendars aside for me until I get back up and running I would really appreciate it.

Talk to you all soon. :) :) :) :) :)

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Hubby cooked dinner.....
« on: October 25, 2005, 09:49:21 am »
and I think I'm going to be sick.

Hubby thought he would help by making dinner while I ran a few errands.  I explained to him what to do and he cooked while I was out.  Well, I took one bite and I needed to wash it down with a gallon of water.  I had told him to saute garlic in a little butter and then add the meatballs, (meatball stroganoff).  His dumb butt thought he'd take a shortcut and poured a TON of garlic salt in the butter instead.  I've never added more than a pinch of salt to an entire meal my whole life.  It was like taking a bite into a salt block.  I know he was trying to help, and I tried to be nice about it....but OMG it was awful. :P

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / What Breed is Blue?
« on: October 25, 2005, 07:58:40 am »
OK, this is how you can tell we're parents.  Me and my husband are sitting there playing with our 3 year old and one of her animals is Blue from Blue's Clues.  We start discussing what type of dog Blue is.  We have no clue.  Maybe a hound?  Maybe a Dane puppy?  So my husband wants me to ask all of you what breed you think Blue is.  Feel free to make fun of us just for asking this question. :)

There is a female great dane puppy for adoption in Big Spring TX.  She was listed on Dogster and she's still available.  She's 5 months old.  The owners have decided that they aren't dane people after all.   >:(  If anyone is interested please contact the owner and give her a great home.

I wished I lived in Lithuania.  This pretty girl is up for adoption there.  I don't know why anyone would want to get rid of her.  She's on Dogster.  There are 1100 dogs for adoption on there all over the world.

Transporting & Traveling With Dogs / Airline Crate suggestions
« on: October 20, 2005, 08:32:46 pm »
Hi Everyone,

Well, hubby just came down on orders for Germany.  That's not the worst part.  We leave in 8 weeks.  I need to find airline approved crates for Lily and Raven so they can fly with us.  Any suggestions?  I've googled it, and I think I'm more cofused now. lol.  In a sit Lily is 39" and Raven is a 32".  So I need some crates with these heights.  Length I need 42" for Lily and 34" for Raven.  I need to either find these or have them made ASAP so any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks :)

Great Dane Discussions / Lily swallowed a chewy
« on: October 19, 2005, 08:48:48 pm »
Lily got a hold of a rawhide chewy off the top of the fridge.  At first she was chewing it nice so I didn't take it away.  I went to put my youngest down for a nap and when I came back it was gone.  She swallowed the whole thing.  It wasn't very big.  Maybe 2"x3", but I'm worried about her now.  You think she'll be ok?

I thought it would be fun to find out how everyone came up with their pets names.

I'll start.

Lily was given her name by the rescue.  She responds good to it so I kept it.

Raven's name was almost Bear.  We were all in the car on the way home from getting her and everyone was giving ideas for her name.  My then two year old thought Chocolate cookie was good.  My oldest wanted Blackie.  My husband wanted Bear because she was so furry and cuddly.  I wanted Raven because she was pure black.  Guess who won??? he he he.  ME!!!!  It suits her now perfectly.  She's attracted to shiny objects. lol. :D

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / I have to vent....sorry
« on: October 17, 2005, 09:12:58 pm »
I have to vent about something that happened yesterday.  I was taking Lily and Raven for their evening walk and part of our walk takes us by a playground.  Normally the kids will ask if they can come over and pet my dogs.  But last night a huge group just came running at them.  OK, I'm 5'1 trying to hold on to 200lbs. of dog.  I can tell by looking at Lily that she's ok with it.  Raven on the other hand has all the hair on her back standing straight up and is beginning to low growl.  She likes kids, but she was scared out of her mind at them all running at her.  So I yell to the kids that they shouldn't run at strange dogs and they just keep coming.  So I'm trying to back the dogs up (yeah like that was happening) and I'm telling the kids to stop.  Finally they get there and Lily is ok.  She's wagging her tail and they're petting her.  Thank god Raven had her pinch collar on because I was able to keep her at my side while they all pet Lily.  Then they all start going over to Raven to pet her.  Now, she is growling because she's nervous and I told them I didn't trust her behavior so please don't pet her.  What do they do, they stick their hands out toward her.  By this time I was ready to start screaming.  What are parents teaching their kids these days.  I would never have approaced a strange dog running or without the permission of the owner.  FINALLY, a parent came over and told the kids to leave me alone.  Where was that parent when those kids were running at me?  Arrrrrrrrrrrrr r, I'm so frustrated.  I guess I'll have to change their walking route.

Sorry about that.  I had to get that out. :-[

Treatment & Preventative Meds / BLOAT Prevention
« on: October 12, 2005, 06:34:51 pm »
Has anyone ever heard of getting a procedure called a gastropexy done at the same time as a spay/neuter to prevent Bloat?  I read an article on it and wanted to see if anyone here had it done and about what the cost was.  I've always been very fearful of bloat and if there's something I can do to ease my mind about it, I want to do it.  Thanks. :)
