Thank you for everyone's well wishes for Lily.  Lily was due to be spayed in January and have the gastropexy done at the same time.  I have no intentions of ever breeding her.  I've just never seen a dog be so aggressive towards a bitch in heat.  She wasn't even in standing heat yet.  Well, I talked to the owner of the pit and he claims that it wasn't his fault because the pit is not "his".  He's just watching it for a friend.  Why do people always do that?  Why can't they just take some responsibility .  I kept my dog contained, why couldn't he?  I wasn't even asking him to pay the whole thing.  Just half.  Oh well, you live and learn.  I learned that if any dog approaches the fence to get Lily inside immediately.  I also learned never ever trust your husband to keep a good eye on what's going on. lol. :)

Great Dane Discussions / The Last Week

Hi Everyone,

I haven't been here for awhile.  We've been really busy trying to get ready to leave.  We have a final date of December 3rd.  I just wanted to give you all an update on how everything has been.

Last week started out horrible.  Lily, who we were told had gone through a heat cycle right before we got her, went into heat.  It doesn't bother me, but I was not expecting it.  Anyway, I decided against taking her out for walks because there are a lot of other dogs in my neighborhood.  Well I was out there with her last week, and out of nowhere, a dog comes charging my fence.  It was the neighbors blue pit.  I didn't think I had anything to worry about.  My fence is 6 ft. and pretty solid.  So the next day I'm out there with Lily again and my neighbors pit does it again.  Only this time he loosens one of the boards.  I put Lily back inside right away and went to fix the fence.  Later that night my husband takes Lily out and the pit rams the fence again and knocks the board completely loose and charges inside.  Lily and him went at it fighting before my husband even knew what was going on.  Let me tell you how scared I was.  I heard the comotion and ran out there and find my husband trying to seperate them.  I whistled to Lily and she turned to come towards me and the pit grabbed her ear and wouldn't let go.  He ripped a three inch gash in it.  I've never seen so much blood in my life.  My neighbor comes running up to the fence and calls his dog off because he's still trying to go after her.  We finally get the two dogs seperated completely and I called my vet.  She had to go in and she got 14 stitches and an E collar.  The E collar lasted all of 15 minutes once I got her home.  It's been 6 days now since this happened and she still hasn't scratched at the stitches so I don't think I'll have to put it back on her.

Anyway, I didn't know that a male dog would fight a dog in heat, but I guess I was misinformed.  And the owner of the other dog not only didn't apologize, but didn't even offer to help pay the vet bill which was hefty.  But Lily is ok and that's what counts.

So that combined with having to get new passports, all get medical screenings, having one child with the flu, and enough paperwork to put a lawyers firm to shame has kept me from my favorite place.  BPO!!!!!

I probably won't be here much between now and when we leave, so let me offer you all a very happy Thanksgiving and a wonderful Christmas and New Year.  I wish everyone luck on the calendar contest, puppy kisses to all of Raven and Lily's pup pals, and a big hello to all the newbies.  I'll miss you all, but hopefully I won't be off line too long.  And Jaime, if you could put one of the calendars aside for me until I get back up and running I would really appreciate it.

Talk to you all soon. :) :) :) :) :)

I vote #1 also.  Less restrictive, and there isn't the spay/neuter requirement.  Lily isn't spayed yet.  She won't be until we get to Germany now. :)

Stress can definetly cause hives.. and then you probably get more stressed because you have hives, a never-ending circle.

Repeat after me.. Goooz-fraba... (from anger management)

Goooz-fraba....that is the funniest word I've ever heard. :D

You can try adding fish oil capsules to her diet.  Or a little olive oil.  You can also apply aloe directly to her skin and rub it in good. :)

Did the sweater you were wearing have wool in it?  That usually triggers it for me.

Sorry you're dealing with hives.  I get them all the time.  Try Oatmeal bath by avino.  Or the oatmeal cream.  It works wonders.  The calamine works good, but don't put any good clothes over it, lol, they'll be pink.  Benadryl cream, and believe it or not, and this sounds gross, but Preperation H cooling gel.  A&D diaper rash cream.  I have an endless list.  As I said, I get hives all the time. ;D

I came here to tell everyone about my cooking challenged husband because I would never tell him to his face that he doesn't do enough.  He works 24/7 for the Army.  He's always on call, in the field, deployed.  He doesn't have time to worry about anything but the army.  But I knew that when I married him.  I love him even if he causes my eyes to swell from too much sodium or washes my white underthings with a red t-shirt.  He does try.  And I feel bad now for complaining about him, but some things you just have to share with your friends. :)

I actually found it the old fashion way....I was surfing the :D

Not all best Westerns do. I worked at one for a while and they gave a woman with a service dog a hard time. They're lucky she didn't sue them

Sorry  :-[ I know that I stayed at one and they were great.  I guess it all depends on where you are.

Maybe she got in over her head, but why then did she request more rescues?  You don't just acquire 500 dogs over night.  And yet she was waiting on a shipment of 50 more from a pitbull rescue.  She put up signs after Katrina welcoming rescues in.  Her property looks like it has been that way for a long time.  I don't think the conditions were caused by taking in rescues after Katrina.  I think they've been like that for a long time.  She had numerous complaints about her even before Katrina.  Maybe she started off with good intentions, or maybe she didn't.  Either way, she should have been checked out a long time ago.  Rescues are supposed to have home visits just like fosters and adopters.  Why was she never investigated before now?  Maybe I'm just a jaded person.  But I think there's a lot more to this than we'll ever know.

i just read this last nite... what i don't understand is... why'd someone VOLUNTARILY do this? there's no money involved in fostering 100+ pets is there? i mean... why'd this woman want to keep 100 pits? i don't see the logic behind her actions... does she actually think she's helping the dogs?

There may be no money from the H.S. or the ASPCA, but that doesn't stop her from trying to solicit donations from poor unsuspecting people.  She probably hoped to gain profit off the disaster by taking in these animals and then begging for money which so obviously would NOT go to these poor animals.

I just spent the last 20 minutes crying my eyes out over this.  I have never seen anything so horrible in my life.  I've seen animal abuse before, but not at this magnitude.  All I could think was what those poor dogs must have felt like laying in a cage day after day in their own feces and urine, starving for food, water and attention.  Left out in the heat of the day and the cold of the night.  No toys, no soft bed.  No one to love them.  What animal deserves that?  Maybe they should lock her and her husband in a tiny little cage and let them go all over themselves and not feed them half the time.  People like that don't think of dogs as a living breathing thing.  They think of them as a comodity.(sp?)  IMHO if it isn't good enough for me, it isn't good enough for my dogs. :'(

I made it through dinner, lol.  I just didn't ask for seconds.  He's ok in the kitchen normally if I'm watching him.  I guess I can't leave him alone though.  We've also been through the laundry thing over and over.  I even made a list of what gets washed with what and what temp. and what to add, ie. bleach, oxy powder, etc.  I think he just chooses to be dense sometimes to get out of it.  I'm the type of person that just says, never mind, I'll do it myself. :)
LOL!...I am just the opposite...I am more like "you WILL get it even if I have to beat it into you" (I don't actually have to beat anyone but they are sure I might at any time :D) idently my kids hate me. :D

Don't worry, my kids hate me and I do everything for them. :)

I don't have it in me to demand anything from him.  He has enough worries. :)
